Joining Suncor means you will work for one of the best companies in Canada, providing tremendous future potential where talented people thrive and lead. As our business evolves, so do our employment opportunities. Our work culture includes a dynamic mix of professionals, with a diversity of skills and expertise.
Are you a seasoned technical and strategic specialist with strong leadership skills? We are looking for a candidate to translate the objectives developed by our senior leaders into deployable strategies for all our Oil Sands operations (Syncrude, Fort Hills, and Base Mine). In this dynamic role, you will apply a broad spectrum of mine engineering principles to support the development and implementation of regional strategies across our Suncor operated Oil Sand assets including (but not limited to):
- Mine of the Future (working to support further implementation of autonomous mining operations in the region)
- Regional Fleet Strategies (path to insourcing main face production and mine civil fleets to improve productivity and reduce cost)
- Re-thinking our material handling in mine operations, assessing options and developing business cases
You will also be responsible for the identification and mitigation of regional synergies and opportunities to improve operational performance of the Oil Sands business unit.
Minimum Requirements:
- A bachelor’s degree in mining, Civil, Geological, or Mineral Processing Engineering
- 10 years of relevant, combined oil sands experience in mine planning, mine operations and/or mine projects, with increasing levels of responsibilities
- Currently licensed as a professional engineer or immediately eligible for membership with the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta (APEGA)
- Self-starter with a success record in a role which required creativity, change management or a group start-up
- High capacity for uncertainty, flexibility and strong ability to lead though influence rather than direct line responsibility
- Collaboration, ability to work with sense of urgency to establish credibility to achieve the best results and deliver the most value
- Continuous improvement mindset and an ability to seek greater knowledge and understanding of systems, processes and hazards in the operation
- Strategic mindset – able to hypothesize and envision opportunities that may exist across lease boundaries, unencumbered by current restrictions or limitations that may exist
- Strong written and verbal communication skills including advanced presentation development skills; able to present ideas and results to all levels of management including internal and external audiences
Responsibilities:
- Provide analysis and recommendations to senior leadership with little direct guidance
- Manage change across the entire Oil Sands business unit
- Provide technical leadership in the development and optimization of integrated mine, tailings and closure plans with a planning horizon of one year to life of mine from a regional lens
- Conduct strategic studies to provide clarity to the business on options available including making recommendations to management.
- Mentor, and potentially lead, junior staff and support their development
- Address issues and lead a team of internal and external experts in problem analysis, solution evaluation, cost estimating and design, and champion the recommended path within Suncor and outside companies
- Develop analysis and materials to support economic decision approval required to improve regional operations
- Facilitate cross-functional opportunity workshops to assist mine sites in the development of business scenarios and options that support strategic decision-making and capital allocation
- Support operations and project teams to improve planning process efficiency and completeness
Location and other Key Details:
- Primary work location will be Calgary or Fort McMurray. Frequent travel can be expected with this role (either to Calgary or Fort McMurray)
- Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with some travel to Oil Sands site locations and internationally to expertise providers
- We require qualified and safety-focused employees for business-critical roles that maintain our commitment to operational excellence and reliable operations
Why Suncor?
Suncor's operations include oil sands development, production and upgrading; offshore oil and gas; petroleum refining in Canada and the U.S.; and the company's Petro-Canada retail and wholesale distribution networks (including Canada's Electric Highway, a coast-to-coast network of fast-charging electric vehicle stations).
With a strong strategy for growth and our long-standing approach to sustainability, operational excellence, capital discipline and technology and innovation, Suncor offers a solid foundation for you to continue building your career. We are committed to providing a diverse and inclusive work environment where every employee feels valued and respected. We have numerous employee inclusion networks to help foster an inclusive and respectful culture and drive positive change within Suncor.
