Detailed Overview
Reporting to administratively to the Manager, Clinical Operations and clinically to the Professional Practice Chief, Occupational Therapy, the occupational therapist works as part of a multi-disciplinary team and is responsible for the provision of occupational therapy services on the MH&SUS in-patient psychiatric unit.
Responsibilities
- In consultation with clients, team members, other professionals, service providers and families, plans, develops and coordinates rehabilitation programs on the in-patient psychiatric unit. Evaluates and revises programs as required.
- Performs occupational therapy assessments, individual interventions, discharge planning, documentation and follow up using occupational therapy formal and informal assessment and treatment tools, techniques and practices.
- Provides clinical services using recovery based approach to assist clients to address the occupational performance issues important to them.
- Conducts home assessments/community visits as required for assessments, treatments and/or transitioning clients back to the community.
- Prioritizes clinical services and workload in accordance with Fraser Health policies and guidelines.
- Communicates and collaborates with the multi-disciplinary team on the inpatient psychiatric unit and other teams that are involved in or will be involved in the care of the patient when they will be discharged.
- Participates in developing, monitoring, revising and using written policies, procedures, professional guidelines, and quality assurance standards used in occupational therapy programs for mental health.
- Participates in student education by providing guidance and input to current and potential occupational therapy, rehabilitation assistant, or other students.
- Collaborates and/or supervises activity workers, volunteers and peer support workers as directed by the coordinator.
- Reports the operating and capital budget requirements for the occupational therapy program; participates in monitoring the level of supplies and equipment; reports equipment malfunction to the coordinator.
- Maintains knowledge of current evidence-based occupational therapy by reviewing relevant literature, conducting research and/or assisting with special projects, consulting with other healthcare providers and attending related educational programs to enhance delivery of patient care; sets measureable performance goals and objectives.
- Performs other related duties as assigned/required.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
Graduation from an approved program of Occupational Therapy. Current full registration with the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC. Eligible for membership in the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists - British Columbia (CAOT - BC).
