We provide free delivery.

Job Summary

The Pharmacy Assistant assists the pharmacist in welcoming patients, managing sales, maintaining patient records, billing third parties, and dispensing and compounding medication. He or she must provide unparalleled service to patients. Activities include greeting and assisting patients, maintenance of patient records, prescription processing, organization and maintenance of the pharmacy work environment and medication and pharmacy supply inventory management.

Competencies

Knowledge:

  • Current knowledge of applicable laws and regulations for pharmacy practice
  • Understanding of the limits of the pharmacy assistant’s role and appropriate boundaries
  • Knowledge of the requirements for confidentiality and privacy of patient information
  • Maintenance of knowledge and skills required for the role
  • Knowledge and application of the Medicine Shoppe System (for example, Critical Conversations)

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy has the following roles that each Pharmacy Assistant is expected to cover:

  • Warmly welcome patients to the pharmacy.
  • Answer and triage phone calls
  • Direct patients to over-the-counter medications or items as requested; ask if patients need a consultation from a Pharmacist
  • Ensure a Pharmacist has completed the clinical Pharmanet check with appropriate counselling, education, and review on all prescriptions prior to release of a prescription
  • Assist the front counter team with management of intake of new prescriptions and refill requests
  • Scan purchases on the Point of Sale system; assist with rentals of equipment, handle cash, debit and credit card payments, and payments on accounts.
  • Ring off the tills at the end of the day and count cash.
  • Prepare, process, and compound (if needed) prescriptions
  • Ensure appropriate documentation of filling processes
  • Ensure the narcotic inventory counts are accurate with each fill (back counts)
  • Ensure the accuracy of the prepared prescription
  • Scanning and filing of hard copy prescriptions (electronically).
  • Ensure that a prescription is complete and authentic
  • Receive, interpret and enter prescriptions from patients into pharmacy software
  • Ensure that patient demographic information is current
  • Receive from and transfer to other pharmacies patient prescriptions
  • Ensure the accuracy of drug and personal health information for the Pharmanet record
  • Adjudicate and coordinate billing of prescriptions with third party payers; settle various problems with third party payers, and explain prescription pricing and reimbursement to patients
  • Assist patients in sourcing payment for their medications as needed, in collaboration with a Pharmacist
  • Ensure that a prescription is complete and authentic
  • Receive, interpret, and enter prescriptions from patients into pharmacy software
  • Ensure that patient demographic information is current
  • Receive from and transfer to other pharmacies patient prescriptions
  • Ensure the accuracy of drug and personal health information for the Pharmanet record
  • Adjudicate and coordinate billing of prescriptions with third party payers; settle various problems with third party payers, and explain prescription pricing and reimbursement to patients
  • Assist patients in sourcing payment for their medications as needed, in collaboration with a Full Pharmacist
  • Prepare Blister Pack compliance packaging.
  • Ensure the narcotic inventory counts are accurate with each fill.
  • Ensure complete and accurate documentation for packaging activities.
  • Ensure the accuracy of the prepared prescription.
  • Prepare compliance packaging from the PacMed.
  • Source and order medications and supplies as required.
  • Replenish pharmacy supplies as needed and ensure adequate medication inventory is maintained;
  • Ensure that the order is sent on a daily basis
  • Receive, price and shelve medications and supplies
  • Remove, and return where possible, expired medications
  • Demonstrate medical devices, such as glucometers, nebulizers and home blood pressure machines as needed
  • Have a working knowledge of the items for sale in the Home Health Care area and be able to direct patients to items as needed.
  • Clean and sanitize the dispensary and pharmacy as required in collaboration with the pharmacy team
  • Maintain an orderly work environment
  • Appropriate shredding of patient information
  • Appropriate disposal of drug waste
  • Emptying of garbages and recycling as needed
  • Facing and dusting of shelves in pharmacy and front store.
  • Vacuuming for front store area and sweeping of the dispensary area
  • Administrative duties as required
  • Other duties as required by the Pharmacy Manager

Education

  • High school diploma
  • Hold a pharmacy assistant/technician certificate from a CCAPP accredited college or equivalent experience is an asset

Qualifications and Requirements

  • 3-5 years experience in a community pharmacy is an asset
  • Available to work weekdays as scheduled
  • Able to stand for long periods at a counter to work
  • Certifications in home healthcare services or other health-related areas an asset
  • Must be currently living in the Comox Valley (Comox, Courtenay, Cumberland or surrounding area).
