POSITION SUMMARY
The optometrist will travel to 6 KO communities for approximately 4 days at a time every other week throughout the working year (pending available accommodations and weather conditions). The optometrist will perform in-person individual assessment, treatment, and consultation. The optometrist will be expected to prescribe and fit eyeglasses and contact lenses and recommend exercises to correct vision problems and/or ocular disorders. The optometrist will refer patients to ophthalmologists in Northern Ontario (and Manitoba) urban hubs when surgery or treatment is warranted for any number of conditions (cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, etc.). Additionally, the optometrist will be expected to provide capacity-building workshops for community members and deliver presentations to community members (including chief and council and health staff) as needed to educate on vision issues. Follow-up will be conducted during subsequent community visits and over the Ontario Telemedicine Network (OTN). Travel by plane will occur to reach remote communities and some travel by car will also be required to reach KO community members residing in urban settings such as Sioux Lookout, Dryden, Red Lake, and within Thunder Bay.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Registration with the College of Optometrists of Ontario is a requirement for this position.
- Conduct prescription, fitting, and dispense of eyewear as needed.
- Run workshops to help promote community health literacy on ocular hygiene, conditions, and general strategies to build community capacities as needed.
- Examine community members’ eyes, conduct tests as appropriate using specialized equipment to determine visual efficiency and ocular health.
- Use and access an electronic medical records system for timely reporting, charting, and referring.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Unconditional registration with the College of Optometrists of Ontario.
- 1+ years of experience working with remote Northern communities is an asset.
- A doctor of optometry degree.
- Ability to read, speak, or understand any of the northern communities' dialects will be considered an asset.
