The Role
We are looking for a Partner, M&A Advisory to lead our sell-side M&A advisory business and become a trusted partner to clients seeking to execute a successful succession or exit strategy.
The ideal candidate is entrepreneurial, excited about the opportunity to work for a highly specialized boutique firm, and enthusiastic about becoming an equity partner while leading the firm toward future growth and success.
You will bring 10+ years of experience serving financial institutions (e.g., banks, insurers, wealth managers, etc.) and be able to leverage an existing network to win sell-side mandates from CIRO dealers and registered portfolio management firms.
Responsibilities
Leadership & Business Development
- Lead and grow the sell-side M&A advisory practice, with a focus on financial institutions, CIRO dealers, and registered portfolio management firms.
- Develop and execute a strategic plan to drive firm growth, expand market presence, and enhance brand positioning.
- Leverage an existing network and industry relationships to generate and secure new sell-side mandates.
- Build and maintain long-term relationships with business owners, institutional investors, and other key stakeholders.
- Represent the firm at industry events, conferences, and networking forums to enhance visibility and credibility.
Deal Origination & Execution
- Oversee the entire M&A deal lifecycle, from initial client engagement through to closing.
- Lead transaction structuring, valuation analysis, and due diligence processes to maximize value for clients.
- Develop and present compelling deal materials, including confidential information memoranda (CIMs), management presentations, and financial models.
- Manage negotiations with buyers, ensuring optimal deal terms for clients.
- Act as a trusted advisor to clients throughout the M&A process, guiding them through complex strategic and financial decisions.
Firm Leadership & Growth
- Play a key role in shaping the firm’s strategic direction and long-term vision.
- Mentor and develop junior team members, fostering a high-performance culture.
- Establish and refine best practices for deal execution, client service, and operational efficiency.
- Contribute to thought leadership and market insights through whitepapers, industry reports, and media engagements.
Financial & Operational Management
- Drive revenue growth and profitability for the M&A advisory practice.
- Manage and optimize firm resources to ensure efficient deal execution and client service delivery.
- Collaborate with firm leadership to develop and implement key business initiatives.
- Maintain compliance with regulatory requirements and ethical standards in all deal activities.
Qualifications & Experience
Education & Professional Designations
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business, or a related field (MBA or CFA designation preferred).
Industry & Deal Experience
- 10+ years of experience in investment banking, M&A advisory, corporate finance, or private equity, with a strong focus on financial institutions (e.g., banks, insurers, wealth managers, asset managers).
- Proven track record of successfully originating, leading, and closing sell-side M&A transactions, particularly for CIRO dealers and registered portfolio management firms.
- Strong financial modeling, valuation, and deal structuring expertise, with a deep understanding of transaction mechanics, regulatory considerations, and due diligence processes.
- Experience in executing complex deals, including negotiating terms, structuring earn-outs, and managing buyer-seller dynamics.
Business Development & Leadership Experience
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong client relationships and act as a trusted advisor to business owners, executives, and institutional investors.
- Established industry network with financial institutions, investors, and professional advisors, enabling access to proprietary deal flow.
- Experience in managing and mentoring teams, fostering a high-performance, entrepreneurial culture within an advisory firm.
- Strong leadership, communication, and strategic thinking skills, with the ability to drive growth and enhance the firm’s visibility in the market.
Regulatory & Sector-Specific Knowledge
- Deep understanding of the regulatory landscape affecting M&A in financial services, including CIRO (Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization) regulations and compliance requirements for dealers and portfolio managers.
- Familiarity with the competitive and operational landscape of mid-market financial institutions and asset managers in Canada.
