Job Description Summary

UBC Building Operations provides comprehensive facilities maintenance, operations and renovation services for lands and buildings owned by the University of British Columbia. The Municipal Services group is responsible for providing waste management services, soft and hard landscape services, as well as moving and general labour services for all of the Vancouver campus.

This position works in the Waste Management division of Municipal Services, which provides both waste management services and waste reduction education to the UBC campus community through the coordination of recycling, composting and litter reduction initiatives. Waste Management supports special events on campus, helps to coordinate the redistribution of surplus office materials, and provides other important services such as paper shredding, compost consulting and special items recycling.

Organizational Status

The Truck Driver reports to the Manager, Municipal Services and receives daily work assignments and directions from the Operations Head for Waste Management. The Driver works collaboratively with other Truck Drivers and labourers within the Waste Management team.

Work Performed

  1. Operates trucks over 7,000 lbs. GVW and up to including 16,000 lbs. GVW engaged in transporting materials, equipment and a variety of cargo.
  2. Responsible for collecting waste from garbage cans throughout campus; collecting glass waste and solvent bottles; collecting waste from Schaeffer bins throughout campus; dumping waste at the South Campus compactor; dumping waste at the public dump off-site; driving the vehicle on campus and on public streets; cleaning the vehicle, conducting vehicle safety check and inspections.
  3. Responsible for the pickup of compostable organics in Schaeffer bins on campus, collecting Schaeffer compost bins throughout campus and replacing with empty bins; delivering full compost bins to the South Campus composter. Loads, unloads, receives, and dispatches cargo and maintains associated records.
  4. Carries out routine maintenance on the vehicle being operated.
  5. Assists skilled workers in duties related to areas such as construction, excavation, road repair and landscaping, and performs a variety of routine tasks associated with the operation, care and maintenance of the buildings and grounds, as assigned; operates and maintains the necessary tools and equipment required to complete assigned tasks.
  6. Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Truck Drivers make decisions related to the sequence of assigned duties. Errors in determining the most efficient method of work may cause minor delays in service to the university community.

Supervision Received

The Truck Driver reports to the Manager, Municipal Services and receives daily work assignments and directions from the Operations Head for Waste Management. The Truck Driver works from oral and written instructions and to established departmental policies and procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

High School graduation or Secondary school education and Valid BC Drivers Licence. The equivalent combination of education and experience. Valid and subsisting BC Drivers License minimum class 5 with a satisfactory driving record. Forklift or Air-brake ticket an asset. Must be familiar with, or be able to learn, current relevant safety regulations. Ability to follow policies, procedures, and instructions. Ability to work both independently and within a team environment. Ability to provide quality service to customers in a courteous, patient manner. Ability to develop and maintain cooperative and productive working relationships.
