Calgary Alberta DJ, CA Walmart Full time

Position Summary: This Health and Safety Specialist role is responsible for the planning, implementing, and monitoring of specific Workplace Health and Safety Programs and performing safety inspections and audits with the goal of identifying opportunities to remediate risk and ensure compliance and continuous improvement. This position will oversee the day-to-day health and safety program requirements across a region and enhance and support the safety culture in facilities while teaching, training, recognizing, and inspiring associates. The main goal is to ensure a safe working environment and collaborate with associates, leaders, and safety teams to prevent injuries and accidents.

What you'll do:

  1. Perform a thorough assessment of the organization's health and safety training needs. Identify gaps in knowledge, skills, and competencies across different levels and departments. Develop a comprehensive training plan that addresses key areas such as accident investigation, root cause analysis, and health and safety roles and responsibilities. Coordinate and facilitate health and safety training sessions using various delivery methods, such as classroom instruction, workshops, online courses, and hands-on demonstrations. Solicit feedback from participants to assess the effectiveness of training sessions and identify areas for improvement. Review and update health and safety training programs to include new information, regulatory updates, best practices, and lessons learned from accidents/incidents or near misses. Stay abreast of emerging trends and technologies in health and safety training to enhance the effectiveness of training delivery. Maintain accurate records of training attendance, completion, and evaluation results.
  2. Ensure business needs are met by evaluating the ongoing effectiveness of current H&S plans, programs, and initiatives; consulting with business partners, managers, co-workers, or other key stakeholders; soliciting, evaluating, and applying suggestions for improving efficiency and cost-effectiveness; and supporting a safe work environment.
  3. Obtain health and safety data from various sources, including accident/incident reports, near-miss reports, injury reports, safety inspections, and risk assessments. Analyze the data to identify trends, patterns, and/or common themes related to workplace accidents, injuries, and hazards. Review feedback and suggestions provided by the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC). Based on data analysis, JHSC feedback, and risk assessments, develop comprehensive action plans to address identified issues and improve health and safety performance. Define clear objectives, timelines, responsibilities, and performance metrics for each action plan.
  4. Act as a mentor to all levels within the organization, offering guidance on safe practices and procedures. Provide support and resources to help them understand the importance of safety and how it relates to their work. Motivate others by sharing success stories and emphasizing the positive impact a strong safety culture has within the organization. Recognize achievements and milestones in safety performance.
  5. Participate in workplace inspections to highlight and address safety concerns. Solicit feedback from associates to identify areas for improvement. Ensure that identified safety concerns are addressed in a timely manner and resolved. Work with relevant business partners to develop and implement corrective actions, such as engineering controls, administrative measures, or additional training. Follow up regularly to validate that corrective actions have been implemented and are effective.
  6. Obtain safety data from various sources, including accident/incident reports, near-miss reports, safety inspections, audits, training records, and safety metric dashboards. Analyze trends over time using statistical techniques and data visualization tools. Look for patterns, correlations, and anomalies in the data that may indicate underlying issues or areas of improvement. Prepare clear, concise, and visually appealing reports summarizing the findings and work with business partners to implement corrective actions.
  7. Ensure the execution and implementation of value-added H&S strategic initiatives (Mental Health, Safe Lifting, MHE, etc.) by executing H&S Risk Assessments, evaluating operational processes and procedures for potential improvement opportunities; collaborating with regional operations management and cross-functional teams to ensure proposed initiatives match operational capabilities; and overseeing the integration of strategic H&S initiatives into Logistics operations.
