Medical Physicists are health care professionals with specialized training in the medical applications of physics. Their work often involves the use of x-rays, ultrasound, magnetic and electric fields, infra-red and ultraviolet light, heat and lasers in diagnosis and therapy. Medical Physicists participate in all clinical, educational and research activities within the department of Medical Physics, and collaborate extensively with the radiation oncology, radiation therapy, medical dosimetry and leadership teams. The responsibilities of a clinical medical physicist lie predominantly in the areas of radiotherapy and diagnostic imaging. The roles of a Medical Physicist in radiotherapy include treatment planning and radiotherapy machine design, testing, calibration, and troubleshooting. The roles of a medical physicist in diagnostic imaging include machine purchasing and installation, testing, quality control, and operation. Medical Physicists ensure that equipment used in a patient’s diagnosis and treatment is operating correctly. Some treatment techniques at SCA include VMAT (volumetric modulated arc therapy), stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT), total body irradiation (TBI) and HDR (high dose rate) brachytherapy.


Job Requirements:

Education:

• Post-graduate Degree in Medical Physics or a related field Credentials, and have completed a CAMPEP accredited residency program (or equivalent)

• Must be eligible as fellows or members of the Canadian College of Physicists in Medicine
