While MD Anderson - The Woodlands treats all types of cancers, the faculty has particular expertise in the diagnosis, treatment and management of the following cancers: Breast; Colorectal; Dermatology and skin; Endocrine; Genitourinary; Gynecologic; Head and neck; Neurologic; Thoracic.


KEY FUNCTIONS
  1. Transformational Leadership:
    Organizes and prioritizes work of the patient care team which includes, but is not limited to, administration of chemotherapy/biotherapy agents, pump connects/disconnects, administration of antibiotic therapy, administration of IV fluids, rapid response to chemotherapy reactions/emergencies, IV starts, etc.
  2. Assures continuity of care as patients transition across the continuum through appropriate patient education and coordination of services.
  3. Practice autonomously within the scope of professional nursing practice.
  4. Structural Empowerment:
    Active member in shared decision making model at unit level.
  5. Accountable for identifying barriers to patient care and solutions.
  6. Active in developing strong relationships and partnerships with the organization to improve patient outcomes.
  7. Exemplary Professional Practice:
    Trains, coaches and assists team members to ensure optimum patient care and efficient use of resources.
  8. Accountable for the management and provision of patient care in assigned area.
  9. Effectively and consistently functions in related roles, as required.
  10. Demonstrates clinical competency and compassion in providing care, using technology, administering medications, performing procedures and managing emergencies.
  11. Assesses patient's needs for nursing care and other services.
  12. Responsible for coverage for Surgical Oncology and Infusion patients as necessary.
  13. Collaborates with physicians, other services, patient and patient's family to plan care and evaluate outcomes.
  14. Acts as a patient and family advocate in order to uphold patient rights.
  15. New Knowledge, Innovation, and Improvements:
    Improves practice by integrating results and theories of research studies.
  16. Participates in/leads evidenced based practice projects.
  17. Participates in the redesign of care delivery for unit/center patient population.
  18. Empirical Quality Results:
    Ensures integration of safety and quality standards into practice and delivery of team care.
  19. Minimizes at risk behavior in self and others.
  20. Actively reports using the Good Catch and incident reporting systems.
  21. Collaborates with others in quality and performance improvement efforts.
  22. Documents care according to established standards.

EDUCATION
  1. Required:
    Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing.
  2. Preferred:
    Bachelors of Science in Nursing.

EXPERIENCE
  1. Preferred:
    Prior experience in administering Chemotherapy; ICU; or Dialysis.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:
  1. Required:
    Current State of Texas Professional Nursing license (RN).
  2. Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
  3. Preferred:
    American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification as required by patient care area.

All clinical nurses with less than one year of registered nurse (RN) work experience will be required to participate in the Clinical Nurse Residency Program.
