Hudson College is seeking a friendly and organized cook/chef to take over the school's in-house hot lunch program from our current much-appreciated chef, who is retiring this year. Hudson is a down-to-earth, community-oriented private school with 440 students from JK–Grade 12. Between 65–175 students and staff enjoy our hot lunch program daily.


Hudson's school year runs from the beginning of September to the end of June, with approximately 165 service days; Monday–Friday from 8 AM to approximately 1:30 PM.


Reports to: Director of Operations

Salary: 40-42K annually (for approx. 10 months of work)


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare food for lunch following established safe preparation guidelines, cleanliness, efficiency of service, and attention to student tastes and requirements.
  • Prepare food supply orders based on projected meal sales for delivery and shop for any needed items not available from the delivery supplier.
  • Set up kitchen workstation with all needed ingredients and equipment.
  • Prepare ingredients by measuring, weighing, mixing, chopping, trimming, and peeling food items.
  • Safely uses a variety of utensils, including knives, and safely operates equipment such as ovens, stoves, slicers, mixers, etc.
  • Arrange, garnish, and portion food according to established school meal portion guidelines (i.e. S, M, L)
  • Properly stores food by adhering to food safety policies and procedures.
  • Clean and sanitize work areas, equipment, dishes and utensils.
  • Demonstrate interpersonal communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • This role may have physical demands including, but not limited to, lifting, bending, pushing, pulling and/or extended walking and standing.


ORGANIZATION

  • Accept and reconcile deliveries with ordering invoices, putting packages into their appropriate locations for storage both in pantries and refrigerated areas.
  • Be accurate and accountable for handling funds to purchase food and supplies.
  • Maintain a clean working kitchen during and after service.
  • Complete regular inventory checks to ensure the kitchen stock of utensils and equipment is sufficient for the kitchen's needs.
  • Meet with the Director of Program Services to evaluate student and staff meal choices, food purchases, and daily orders.


SERVICE

  • Work with the Director of Program Services and staff who assist with plating and distributing food, and communicate effectively about any concerns that may arise in this area.
  • Develop and maintain a good working relationship with students and staff in the building that promotes an inviting atmosphere for food service.
  • Provide ideas and make suggestions to increase school meal participation, efficiency of service, or other program improvements as observed.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to work with others as a team to execute various tasks with a positive, mature attitude.
  • Treat all food service team members, school staff, and students with respect and fairness, focusing on accomplishing a common goal.


EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

  • Food Handling Certificate.
  • Validated knowledge of the basic principles of food preparation, various cooking methods, and food safety regulations such as accurate food handling, sanitation, and storage.
  • Have at least three years of experience cooking in an active kitchen or food-preparation business serving customers.
  • Have experience in meal planning and the creation of whole and nutritious meals.
  • Have experience working as a part of a team.


LANGUAGE AND OTHER SKILLS

  • Proficiency in the English language is required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, school staff and administration and establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries and complaints from students or school community members.
  • Ability to determine quantities of food to prepare, quantities of ingredients for specific meals, and shop for fresh ingredients within a budget.
  • Ability to perform other duties independently as assigned.
