Calgary Alberta DJ, CA Alberta Health Services Full time

The Neuro Rehabilitation programs, including the Early Supported Discharge team and the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation clinics, support a population ranging from stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, or other neurological injury/disorder. Reporting to the Unit Manager, the Therapy Assistant works within an inter-professional team to assess and provide treatment to achieve rehabilitation goals from their specific therapy area. As appropriate, they will also incorporate a transdisciplinary approach to rehabilitation goals relating to other therapy professions. This position provides direct and indirect client care activities under the direction of a licensed professional (e.g. Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist, Speech-Language Pathologist, Recreation Therapist, Social Worker, Psychologist or Nurse). Assessment and intervention are provided in community settings, primarily in the patient’s home, but at times also in other contextually and goal appropriate environments. The focus of intervention is heavily function-based at the activity and participation levels, while also treating the underlying impairments. As such, this position offers the opportunity to be very flexible, adaptive, and innovative in a client and family centred approach to rehabilitation. The position also includes non-client care activities to support team operations. The Early Supported Discharge Team is connected to many other stakeholders including allied health and nursing staff, coordinators, and physicians along the continuum of care. Resume must be attached to be considered for an interview.

As a Therapy Assistant, you will work both individually and as part of an interprofessional team under the assignment, monitoring and evaluation of an audiologist, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, recreation therapist or speech-language pathologist. You will contribute to effective and efficient rehabilitation services including direct and indirect client care across the health care continuum (healthy living, getting better, living with illness and disability, end of life care) for all ages as well as non-client service provision. This role will require you to work effectively with internal and external partners, and display professionalism and strong ethics in both client centered care and participation in care teams. You will demonstrate evidence of reflective thinking and lifelong learning that enhances individual and team competency. You will have opportunities to use your interpersonal and clinical skills in contributing to quality improvement, program planning and student supervision.

Completion of diploma from an accredited post-secondary rehabilitation Therapy Assistant program or equivalent training may be considered.

Experience working with adult clients/families affected by stroke and/or brain injury within the last 5 years. Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated excellent organizational and time management skills. Demonstrated ability to work autonomously within the scope of a TA, as would be required in community rehabilitation. Demonstrated initiative, analytical thinking, and conflict resolution skills. Able to provide timely information to the professionals assigning therapy tasks and / or service components. Demonstrated ability to function effectively within a client and family centered team of health care professionals and support staff. Advanced computer skills including the use of Microsoft office and Connect Care is required. Demonstrated continuing education in stroke, spinal cord injuries and / or brain injury rehabilitation. Able to provide timely information to the professionals assigning therapy tasks and / or service components. Physically able to perform all assigned tasks.

Minimum 3 years' experience in adult neuro rehabilitation within the last 5 years. Recent experience in adult brain injury, stroke, or spinal cord injury community rehabilitation (e.g., Early Supported Discharge model of care), with occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech-language pathology, and recreational therapy interventions is preferred.
