The Emergency Department at Royal Columbian Hospital and Eagle Ridge Hospital is seeking a Local Department Head.
Supporting the Vision, Values, Purpose, and Commitments of Fraser Health including service delivery that is centered around patients/clients/residents and families:
The Local Department Head shall be an Active Staff Member unless the candidate is a practitioner recruited specifically for the role (in which case the candidate would be appointed to the Provisional category of the Medical Staff until such time as the practitioner is eligible for promotion to the Active category), and who is assigned to the Regional Department and to that facility as the Member’s Primary Site and a member of the Regional Department.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Participating in the Site Operations Committee or equivalent for the Facility
- Functioning as the channel of communication to and from the Regional Department to keep Members practicing within the Facility informed regarding Fraser Health, HAMAC and Departmental objectives, policies, and general activities and to ensure Regional Departments are aware of issues specific to the Facility.
- In collaboration with the Regional Department Head, recommending appointment of practitioners, renewal of Medical Staff membership and privileges December 2020
- Ensuring the requirements of programs operating within the Facility are co-ordinated.
- Promoting health and wellness amongst Members
- Investigating and documenting complaints regarding care provided by Members within the Department at the Facility under the direction of the appropriate Regional Department Head and/or Site Medical Director where appropriate.
- Encouraging a healthy, respectful workplace
- Reviewing with the Regional Department Head the human resource requirements of the Regional Department practicing within the Facility.
- Contributing to the search and selection of applicants for vacancies in the Regional Department
- Conduct morbidity and mortality reviews. Establishing a growth mindset that inspires individuals to gain knowledge and skills required for change while demonstrating emotional intelligence through skilled conversation and communication.
- Encouraging others to learn and embrace new ways of doing things as well as build resiliency while providing support, coaching and encouragement to formal leadership or influences of change.
Education and Experience
Physician licensed to practice in British Columbia with the eligibility for appointment as a member of the local site(s). Five (5) years of medical leadership experience or equivalent, with an interest in development of leadership expertise.

Royal Columbian Hospital is a provincial referral hospital (stroke/cardiac/trauma/neurosurgery) located in New Westminster, BC, with 439 acute beds, with nearly 80,000 visits annually. Services include 24/7 emergency, outpatient, ambulatory care and a range of inpatient services which are supported by a range of community services. In addition to being one of the busiest hospitals in the province, Royal Columbian also serves as a clinical academic campus providing training to University of British Columbia (UBC) medical students as well as residents from some UBC residency programs.
Eagle Ridge HospitalEagle Ridge Hospital has 168 acute care beds. As a community hospital, it provides primary and secondary acute care and some specialty services that can be accessed with or without referrals, such as 24/7 emergency, diagnostics, inpatient and outpatient care in general medicine, rehabilitation, surgery and other specialty services such as urology, plastics, and orthopaedics. As a community hospital within an integrated network of care, ERH provides care and services mostly to its local population with the exception of a regional Rehabilitation Program, which serves all Fraser Health communities.
