Nurse Clinician

Reporting to the Unit Manager, the Nurse Clinician (NC) works as a member of the inter-professional care team collaborating on the delivery of holistic, patient-centered care to meet the needs of individuals, families and caregivers within their scope of practice. The NC is expected to provide leadership within the unit acting as a resource person, role model, bedside nurse, and coach to members of the health care team. In addition, the NC will provide mentoring to charge nurses and is expected to consistently develop a strong cohesive team that fosters quality improvement and a culture of safety for staff and patients. The nurse clinician promotes a positive work environment by identifying and respecting the unique strengths and contributions of staff and facilitating effective patterns of communication. The NC collaborates with a broad range of clinical and managerial staff, including Physicians, Managers, Quality Improvement Consultants, other NCs, Nurse Practitioners, Staff Nurses, Transition Services, Site Managers and Allied Health Professionals. The NC will help to promote optimal patient outcomes as well as provide leadership in the design, re-design, and continuous quality improvement associated with the implementation of AHS and department priorities. The NC maintains competence in all aspects of safe and effective nursing care including psychomotor skills, knowledge of equipment function and use, competencies that are restricted or require special certification, and ongoing implementation of the nursing process. Competency is to be maintained by practicing bedside nursing shifts on a regular basis as part of their rotation. The NC requires the ability to tolerate constant walking, standing, kneeling, bending, reaching, and various postures within a fast-paced unit requiring lifting, pushing, pulling of patients and objects greater than 50lbs.
As a Nurse Clinician (NC), you will be responsible for the coordination of an interprofessional team, in the provision of quality patient (client, resident) care in order to meet the operational priorities and requirements within a clinical setting. You will use an integrative leadership approach in assisting, planning, implementing and evaluating care needs, while assuming responsibility for staff assignments, patient flow and clinical resources. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.
Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). Current BLS with ability to perform CPR and lead BLS. Baccalaureate degree in nursing required. Minimum 5 years’ experience working on an acute inpatient neurological nursing unit required. Minimum 1-2 years’ experience as a charge nurse on an acute inpatient neurological nursing unit required. Seizure monitoring unit experience required. Demonstrated Ability to think critically (e.g. make responsible decisions on staffing based on unit acuity, patient census and overall needs). Demonstrated organizational and leadership abilities required. Experience working with connect care (EPIC) required. Strong demonstrated communication and conflict resolution skills required. Intermediate computer skills required. Clinical expertise in the nursing care of patients with neurological conditions required. Physically able to perform all assigned tasks. The physical demand on this unit is classified as heavy, with most patients ranging in weight from 100 lbs. to 350 lbs. As required, must be able to: Complete patient handling activities e.g. transfers, weight shifts, rolling, mobilizing, operate lifts, Pull, push and lift teaching or unit related items e.g. carts, wheelchairs, teaching materials. Tolerate frequent reaching, standing, walking and sitting throughout the day. Resume must be attached to be considered for an interview. TORBSST certification required. NIH certification required.
A strong understanding of the neurosciences continuum of care from inpatient acute care to rehabilitation and community reintegration with support. Experience in behaviour management. Possesses an understanding and vision for advancing acute neurosciences nursing.
