About the role
Interpret, administer, and direct with respect to the provisions of the Collective Agreements, Company policy and labour legislation. Work to proactively develop healthy and productive relationships with the Union leadership and employees.
Safety is the Core Value of Stelco and the individual will make safety the #1 priority in the execution of all work activities, including monitoring employee safety in support of work efforts.
Your day-to-day:
Interpret, administer, and advise all levels of management/supervision with respect to the provisions of the Collective Agreements, Company policies and procedures, work performance, and relevant employment legislation ensuring the consistent application of all areas.
Conduct workplace investigations.
Recommend and implement corrective actions as required.
Meet with management/supervision, employees and Union officials providing advice and guidance on labour relations and other matters.
Manage the grievance and arbitration procedures including the drafting of formal responses to grievances and settlement agreements, ensuring consistency in resolving issues.
Lead the preparation of grievances for arbitration, as required.
Actively participate in collective bargaining negotiations including the drafting of proposals and contract language.
Maintain a constructive relationship between management and union representatives.
What you bring to the table
Job Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Commerce of Business Administration or related discipline.
Postgraduate in Industrial Relations is an asset.
10+ years of human resources and/ or labour or employee relations experience.
Previous experience in manufacturing, industrial and/ or unionized environments is a strong asset.
Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation or working towards is an asset.
A valid Ontario G or G2 Drivers License and vehicle
Job Skills and Knowledge:
Knowledge of labour/ management principles, statutes, and collective agreement administration.
Familiarity with provincial labour legislation and regulations.
Experience using Microsoft Office and HRIS is required.
Strong planning and organizational skills with the ability to multitask competing priorities.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Good problem solving and leadership skills, with the ability to think and act strategically.
Excellent relationship building skills with the ability to earn trust.
Your work environment:
A fast-paced office environment for a high impact team.
The job is within a heavy industrial environment and you may be required to enter various areas of the facility.
Safety is our highest priority. Safety procedures and guidelines must always be adhered to. This includes wearing all provided PPE such as hard hat, eye and ear protection, respirator, gloves, and safety shoes in designated areas.
On-site mill meetings are required at times.
Travel to and from both facilities (Hamilton and Lake Erie Works) are required at times.
On-call at times.
Lake Erie Works operates 24 hours 365 days a year.
