Reporting to the Coordinator, 2 South RJH, the Occupational Therapist works independently and is responsible for developing, implementing and evaluating rehabilitative programs for complex patients with a combination of psychiatric, medical, and cognitive care needs on the Geriatric Mental Health Acute Care Unit. The Occupational Therapist provides input and information to the Coordinator in the areas of service standards, policy development and rehabilitative service contract management. As well, the Occupational Therapist provides consultation at the program and individual client level regarding rehabilitation practices and approaches.

Travel may be a requirement of this position. Transportation arrangements must meet the operational requirements of the Vancouver Island Health Authority in accordance with the service assignment and may require the use of a personal vehicle.

QUALIFICATIONS: Education, Training And Experience

Graduation from a recognized university program in Occupational Therapy. Current practicing full registration with the College of Occupational Therapists of British Columbia (COTBC). Eligible for membership in the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT). Minimum one year of recent acute hospital experience with two or more of the following specialty areas: Seniors Care, Psychiatry, and Medicine. Valid BC Driver's License.

Skills And Abilities
  • Clinical understanding of the biological and psychological signs of dementia, common psychiatric conditions, and chronic medical conditions associated with aging.
  • Clinical understanding of mental health and addictions treatments for seniors.
  • Ability to integrate and apply COTBC standards in the context of geriatric psychiatry and general medicine.
  • Utilizes the occupational performance model to assess, analyze, plan, conduct, and evaluate patient responses to therapy.
  • Ability to work autonomously in the community while doing assessments.
  • Participates as an effective member of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Creates strategic relationships with inpatient and community leaders in providing planning for transfers and discharges.
  • Ability to organize work effectively while ensuring effective communication of those actions with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Familiarity and understanding of relevant legislation pertaining to the Mental Health Act and the Guardianship Act particularly as these acts apply to privacy of patient information and decision making.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
