Detailed Overview
Reporting to the Manager, Health Services and working without general supervision as a member of the Interdisciplinary Mental Health Team, the Occupational Therapist provides individualized direct care services including the assessment of a resident's occupational performance (person-occupation-environment) from a psychosocial rehabilitation (PSR) perspective, conducting assessments and developing relevant care plans within the context of a resident and group setting. The Occupational Therapist is expected to engage the resident and their support systems as people with full competence and as full collaborators in service planning, delivery and evaluation.
Responsibilities
- Provides direct professional services by conducting: occupational therapy assessments, supportive counselling services including psycho-education to residents and their support systems; life skills training in the areas of personal life, leisure, education and work.
- Develops, implements, evaluates and documents resident's PSR plans in collaboration with the resident, their support systems and interdisciplinary team members; liaises with community-based agencies to ensure support for residents.
- Works with other team members to screen referrals and assess residents for admission to the facility; participates in the admission, discharge and transfer of residents.
- Evaluates effectiveness of occupational therapy interventions and communicates to the Mental Health Team and the physician/psychiatrist of changes in the condition of residents; assists in the development, implementation and evaluation of resident and/or group activity programs, rehabilitation programs or other programs.
- Provides continuous assessment of resident's ability to perform activities of daily living by participating in both group and individual activities related to the realm of personal life, leisure, education and work.
- Participates in interdisciplinary activities such as resident conferences and daily/weekly report meetings.
- Participates in student education by providing guidance and input to current and potential occupational therapy students, rehabilitation assistant students and/or work experience students.
- Provides consultation and in-services on the specialized psychiatric services to other team members, communities, agencies and groups and represents the facility on committees as required.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
Graduation from an approved School of Occupational Therapy; plus two (2) years recent related experience in the mental health field.
Current registration with the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC and eligible for membership in the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists - British Columbia (CAOT - BC).
Valid BC Driver's license, current First Aid, Food Safe and CPR Level C. Access to a personal vehicle for business use.

- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
- Knowledge of relevant legislation
- Knowledge of psychiatric disorders, medications and side effects
- Ability to utilize outcome measurement tools
- Ability to assess situations and diffuse crisis incidents
- Physical ability to perform the duties of the position
- Ability to work effectively with others
- Ability to operate related equipment.
