VOCATIONAL COUNSELLOR
About the Role
As a Vocational Counsellor, you will provide the full continuum of support to participants with disabilities seeking competitive paid employment in an integrated community setting. Working alongside in liaison with community or other referring staff, you ensure the integration of vocational skills into the workforce. You will be responsible for engagement, continuous assessment and the development and implementation of vocational plans. You provide any, or all, of a full range of supports to participants including one-to-one or group counselling, direct job marketing to potential employers, independent job search support, and onsite job coaching.
You will
- Manage and maintain the caseload for all assigned participants in the program
- Coordinate and conduct marketing and outreach activities to community agencies, organizations and employers
- Engage participants and establish trusting collaborative relationships directed towards the goal of competitive employment in an integrated community setting
- Develop relationships with employers in a variety of industries to ensure successful job development for participants
- Create job seeker profiles, resumes and proposals
- Provide onsite job coaching to ensure orientation and training to participants
- Provide ongoing support and training at the job site, by telephone, through one-to-one counselling and by facilitating group support meetings
- Assess, in conjunction with the participant, their support worker and or other appropriate professionals, the participant’s vocational functioning on an ongoing basis and facilitate the setting of appropriate vocational plans
- Conduct job development, direct marketing and job search activities directed toward positions that are consistent with the needs and interests of the participants
- Locate job openings for people served based on their individual skills and abilities
- Develop self-employment strategies if it is the best option
- Coordinate, in liaison with the referring PCCR staff, participant intake into the program ensuring their timely assessment, entrance and orientation.
- Remain current on local and regional labour market trends and the most effective job search strategies and techniques
- Complete reports and documentation on activities as required – employer contact spreadsheet, community development activities spreadsheet, vocational plans, progress notes, program information and records of communication with external community and personal supports
- Ensures the coordination of participants departure from the program, including file closures and referrals to further community, educational and training resources as needed
- Attend meetings as required
- Attend community functions and speak to local business groups
- Plan and deliver service delivery activities to meet the CLBC contact deliverables associated with the contract for the person served
- Undertake other tasks as assigned i.e. any ad hoc requests from management and/or leadership
What you bring:
- Bachelor’s degree in a health or social services field, or equivalent
- 1 year of experience working with people with disabilities (paid or volunteer)
- Experience with Marketing and Networking
- Experience and education in business management
- Strong community relationships to create a network with other employers in the community
- Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills
- Strong computer skills in Microsoft Windows. Must include word processing and competency with Outlook email application and knowledge in Share Vision
- Evidence of the practice of confidentiality
- Current First-Aid and CPR Level C Certification
- Any qualifications or skills required by the funding agency
- Possess a satisfactory physician’s assessment of fitness to work
- All current vaccinations, including COVID-19 vaccination as mandated by the PHO
- Satisfactory criminal record and MCFD HUB clearance
- Have a valid Class 4 Driver's Licence, access to a safe and reliable vehicle and the ability to travel
- Ability to provide a calm, healthy, positive role model to participants
- Ability to problem solve and devise creative solutions to challenges
- Ability to deal effectively with stressful situations and to remain calm in difficult situations while ensuring everyone is treated with respect and dignity
- Ability to work as a productive and interactive team member
- Ability to recognize aspects of a served person’s life that requires support and assistance
- Ability to deal effectively and calmly in crisis situations
- Basic knowledge of program development and implementation
- Knowledge of all safety aspects when supporting individuals
- Knowledge of, and skill in a variety of employment settings
- Ability to work shift work with flexible days and times
