Technical Engineering Manager – Reactivity Control Units

This role is based out of the Candu Energy Inc. home office in Mississauga, Ontario. Reporting to the Director of Reactor Components and Mechanical Engineering Division, the Technical Engineering Manager – Reactivity Control Units will be assigned to work on a new large CANDU design project and will laterally report to the Project Technical Director (PTD).

Your role within the team:

  • Providing technical leadership in Reactivity Control Units design engineering including the preparation of the technical specifications, drawings, design specifications, bill of materials, and design certifications.
  • Providing technical expertise on code and standard requirements such as CSA N285 and ASME Section III Division 1 pressure boundary requirements.
  • Responsible for developing project scope and deliverable definition in compliance with the governing contract documents, quality requirements for the project and any additional customer requirements.
  • Making decisions/recommendations regarding resourcing requirements on the project and working with the relevant functional managers who will assign the engineering resources.
  • Developing and implementing strategies for outsourcing engineering scope within their scope of responsibility with business partners within and outside AtkinsRéalis.
  • Ensuring that an appropriate combination of skills and experience is maintained within the project to provide technical leadership and specialized expertise as required to support the project.
  • Making recommendations on human resource issues and effectively managing and resolving work performance problems as they relate to the project. Providing technical staff with clear expectations and performance measures, meaningful feedback, and recognizing and rewarding achievements.
  • Providing feedback and recommendations regarding technical staff performance to functional home.
  • Supporting functional managers in mentoring, training, developing, motivating, coaching, and evaluating the performance of the staff.
  • Fostering a good working relationship with staff and managers in the Reactor Components and Mechanical Engineering Divisions as well as other Divisions.
  • Working with the Project Manager (PM) to plan the work, ensuring resource availability and allocation, assigning tasks and progress reporting against deliverables.
  • Reviewing and approving project-related documents/drawings and ensuring technical work is performed in accordance with applicable codes and standards and company quality assurance manual.
  • Ensuring that the activities are executed in accordance with the specified requirements on-time and within budget.
  • Interfacing with internal and external customers and stakeholders to establish priorities and ensure leads and staff are working on the prioritized scope of work.
  • Providing strong leadership within the project team and within the company for aspects related to Reactivity Control Units engineering.
  • Interfacing with national regulatory bodies (CNSC and TSSA) and international regulatory bodies such as KINS ISCIR, CNCAN, etc.
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with clients, partners, suppliers, and project stakeholders.
  • Raising scope changes (either requested by the client or discovered internally due to technical findings) and critical issues to the PTD, PM, Director of the Reactor Division, and relevant functional managers.
  • Leading assigned engineers to find solutions for technical issues. If needed, engaging additional help from Functional Engineering to seek issue resolution.

The ideal candidate:

  • University bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent, with a minimum of 10 years technical experience in the CANDU Reactor field.
  • Overall understanding of the CANDU reactor design.
  • Knowledgeable in CANDU reactor reactivity control units.
  • Demonstrated skills in the leadership of a highly technical group.
  • Demonstrated people skills to interact with external clients and organizations.
  • Ability to resolve technical issues.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Understanding of quality assurance manuals and procedures.
  • Knowledge of reconciliation and registration processes is preferred.
  • Familiarity with CSA N285/ASME Section III pressure boundary design.
  • Qualification in ASME III appendix XXIII is beneficial.
  • Experienced in stress analysis and FEA methods alongside other design activities.
  • Knowledge in finite element analysis techniques and codes such as ANSYS, LS-DYNA will be beneficial.
  • Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario (or eligible for registration).
  • Good time management skills.
  • Willing to visit project sites to meet project and operational needs.
