Westside Recreation Centre is a world-class facility based on a lifestyle and wellness concept. Since 2000, we have been providing families with a fun, healthy and affordable environment with world class activities, including a hockey and skating facility, fitness center, gymnasium and an aquatic park. We are currently recruiting for a Head Guard to join our team The Head Guard is a motivated and enthusiastic member of the Westside Aquatic team and is responsible for promoting a positive experience for all visitors of the Aquatic Park which is achieved by maintaining high safety standards, quality instruction & monitoring and creating a positive culture.
Responsibilities:
Westside Head Lifeguards are responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operations of the aquatic area, both while lifeguarding and instructing and are directly responsible for the safe supervision of all staff on shift and assisting with other Aquatic Supervisors/Programmers/Managers during Head Guard shifts.
- To assist with facility promotion and public relations/public education
- To keep Aquatic Park clean and tidy ensuring the health and safety of the Aquatic Park
- To ensure necessary administration is completed effectively and efficiently, meeting all timelines
- To create a work environment that supports motivation, enthusiasm and performance to meet all job standards
Supervision:
- Appropriate supervision in place for all patrons in the Aquatic Park
- Supervision of all staff on shift, in assistance with other Aquatic Supervisors/Programmers/Managers
- Enthusiasm and motivated in ensuring staff perform and meet all job standards
- Assist in covering aquatic staff shifts as needed
- To lead staff in emergency procedures as set out in the operations manual
- To work cooperatively with all employees and plans activities to utilize scheduled time and space
Customer Service:
- Demonstrate a commitment to customer service
- Provide on-going customer service training and support to all Aquatic staff
- Answers all enquires and handling concerns of all patrons utilizing sound judgment and decision-making skills
- Demonstrate excellent interpersonal, conflict-resolution, public relation skills
Communication & Administration:
- Effectively plan, and organize administrative schedule
- Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Documents on shift reports and any other required reports with clear communications to supervisor
- Reports on the performance of the aquatic staff directly to supervisors
- Able to edit, follow-up and give professional constructive feedback to aquatic staff on reports, skills/training etc.
- Assist in staff development and facilitation of training and orientation sessions
- Perform First Aid and emergency procedures as required
- Participate in the development and implementation of Westside Aquatic policies and procedures
- Ensure cleanliness and safety of all aquatic areas, complete and document all repairs and maintenance as required
- Deliver leadership courses and staff training
- Participate in required OH&S inspections, audits and hazard assessments (internal and external)
- Ensure safety awareness and in compliance with all health and safety standards

Physical/Psychological Demands
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, warm, noisy, and demanding environment.
- Ability to complete sessional aquatic skills aligned with Lifesaving Society physical standards.
- Ability to work with vulnerable populations and respect customer/facility confidentiality.
- Ability to lift 20-25lbs and work in a daily routine of sitting, standing, walking, swimming, bending, crouching, and kneeling.
- Extended periods of time in the pool and on pool deck.
- Exposure to chemical used in the pool.
- Exposure to cleaning supplies.
- Ability to complete administration work ergonomically.
Qualifications:
- 2 (two) years of applicable aquatic experience (past experience in supervising role is an asset)
- Current Lifesaving Society Lifesaving & Swim for Life Instructor Certification
- Current National Lifeguard Service Award
- Current Alberta Approved First Aid training agency - CSA Standard Z1210-17 Intermediate First Aid
- Lifesaving Aquatic Supervisor Training is an asset
Employment Term:
- Part-time, but up to a Full-time hourly position (15.0 - 37.5 hours per week)
- Availability to work variable shifts and flexible hours ranging from 5:00am-10:00pm Monday-Sunday
- Submission of Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check
