Estimating Manager

The role of the Estimating Manager (Glazing) is to manage the daily functions of the glazing department. In particular, the Estimating Manager ensures that budgets and estimates are prepared as thoroughly as possible, within the timeframes allowed and encompasses the full scope of glazing work. The individual in this role is also responsible for monitoring the progress of each bid and controlling and ensuring aspects such as escalation, alternates, economies of scale and market influences.


Major Responsibilities:


  • Manage day-to-day functions of the glazing estimating department.
  • Produce bid estimates and budgets as required
  • Ensure efficient bidding processes are employed
  • Ensure current costs are recognized
  • Support accurate, on-time change order procedures
  • Provide value engineering and alternates wherever possible
  • Recognize and act on team training needs
  • Constantly evaluate new technologies and techniques related to estimating
  • Keep abreast of industry developments as they relate to glazing
  • Communicate and revisit performance expectations
  • Coach and mentor subordinates
  • Pursue client relationships to ensure we build a foundation around the client
  • Have weekly meetings with the department to discuss issues and future goals,
  • Answer to Vice president, Managers, and President with any concerns and questions that may arise through-out the year and making sure they know how the department is functioning
  • Make decisions on whether we should pursue certain jobs that are out for tender
  • Have semi-annual meetings with department individually to measure the performance and provide any feedback to the individual if they require any adjustment or if they are exceeding in areas
  • Create meetings on a weekly basis with junior estimators to strengthen the department
  • Sign off on department individuals vacation request and inform Vice President (Estimating and Sales) on the vacation they are taking
  • Organize a meeting with Vice President to make sure the department is on target, complying with the demands, making sure we are communicating with all departments, accomplishing financial objectives, analyzing variances, and identifying any gaps in the departments
  • During the hiring process of new estimator, assign a mentor to make sure the new hire gets the assistance needed during their probation term
  • All other duties as assigned



Education & Training:

Graduate from recognized engineering, architectural or construction management program is an asset.


Knowledge of the current glass and glazing codes


Experience:

At least five years of experience estimating glazing projects, with at least two years in a supervisory role.


Experience with Bluebeam software and Excel spreadsheet design.


Ability to use CAD programs.


Demonstrated competency in the following:


  1. Communication and leadership with staff, and all stakeholders
  2. Judgment and integrity in business decision making commensurate with this role
  3. Multi-tasking and balancing multiple demands, priorities and functions.
  4. Ability to anticipate and provide solutions for management of risk
  5. Time Management – both personal and managing others.
  6. Knowledge of construction industry materials and methods and procedure for the manufacture of products
