Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking an Assistant Director (Chief Curator) for the Zimmerli Art Museum. This position reports to the Director and serves as part of the museum’s senior management team.

Among the key duties of the position are the following:

  • Oversees the work of the Zimmerli’s curatorial departments.
  • Supervises the work of the Curator of European Art and Prints and Drawings, Curator of Russian and Soviet Art, Associate Curator of Prints and Drawings, graduate assistants, and any future curatorial hires.
  • Manages the exhibition schedule and sets curatorial and programmatic priorities.
  • Serves as Curator of the Americas and is responsible for the collections and exhibitions of American and contemporary art.
  • Works with the curators to foster the active use of the museum’s collections and programs by community, faculty, and students from across disciplines.
  • Curates exhibitions interdepartmentally and in collaboration with university faculty and departments.
Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Curatorial Studies or Art History.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of curatorial leadership in an art museum or an arts organization.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Specialization in American and contemporary art, and interest in current trends in art history and new approaches to the study of art and museum practices.
  • Excellent communication skills in both written and oral form.
  • Demonstrated scholarly and research skills with a record of exhibitions and publications.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and proven ability to collaborate.
  • Experience managing exhibition programs, budgets, and curatorial staff.
  • Ability to lead colleagues from within the Zimmerli and outside the Zimmerli in complex collaborative projects.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Art History.
