About the role

Reporting to the Principal Product Manager, and a key partner with engineering and product teams, the Product Designer proposes and executes design solutions that meet requirements and deliver outstanding results for our diverse users, including members, employers, advisors, and internal teams. By advocating for end users and understanding their problems and desired outcomes, the Product Designer ensures an intuitive user experience. They own the visual design of the product, maintaining quality and consistency. If you're passionate about creating user-centric designs and want to make a significant impact, join us at Common Wealth. This is a hybrid role and you are expected to work at least one day per week in the downtown Toronto office with the rest of our product team, as well as to be available to attend key gatherings or working sessions in person.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with product managers and engineers to ensure UX reflects user requirements, business goals and optimal user experience, making recommendations on layout, navigation, and other UI components.
  • Develop mockups and prototypes that clearly illustrate how sites function and look.
  • Prepare and present draft design concepts, wireframes, user flows, and process maps to internal teams, including senior leaders, to effectively communicate design ideas and support decision-making.
  • Proactively identify, troubleshoot, and propose solutions to UX problems.
  • Design and manage the library of design components and company style standards.
  • Write clear, concise, and engaging UX copy that enhances the user experience and aligns with the product’s tone and voice.
  • Conduct user testing and research to continuously improve our customer experience (e.g., building and testing prototypes, analysis of user behaviour, conducting user interviews). Propose improvements to our research and testing process, testing out new tools and methods in collaboration with stakeholders across the company.
  • Prioritize and make tradeoffs throughout the product development lifecycle, working with product and engineering to make the best decisions for the business and our customers.
  • Conduct layout and other design adjustments based on user feedback.
  • Run a monthly internal design share, presenting design work to the entire company for review and feedback.
  • Analyze research data to identify user needs, preferences, and pain points.

Experience & skills

  • Proven work experience (3+ years) as a UI/UX Designer as evidenced by a portfolio. Previous experience at a fintech or start-up is a bonus.
  • Experience working closely with product managers and engineers, able to navigate trade-offs between business value, user value, feasibility, and usability to meet project deadlines.
  • High proficiency with Figma.
  • Ability to articulate and rationalize your concepts or process through whiteboarding.
  • Strong knowledge of usability principles and techniques.
  • Experience working in a collaborative multi-disciplinary team and working directly with developers for the implementation of design.
  • Team spirit and strong communication skills to collaborate with various stakeholders.
  • Strong time-management skills.
  • Proven experience in writing UX copy that aligns with the product’s tone and voice.
  • Experience conducting user research, including user interviews, surveys, and usability testing.
