Senior Research Fellow, Civil Engineering

Calgary Alberta DJ, CA The University of Calgary Full time

Description

Civil Engineering within the Schulich School of Engineering invites applications for a Senior Research Fellow. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Reporting to the Principal Investigators, the candidate will conduct high quality research in hydrological modelling, river flow routing, and floodplain mapping. The primary purpose of this work is to develop a detailed hydrological modeling framework for Canada, focusing on high-resolution models including configuring multi-model simulations (HYPE, MESH, SUMMA), calibrating models using historical and climatological data, and collaborating with the sponsor for continuous model refinement and knowledge transfer. The goal is to generate accurate, adaptable models for flood plain mapping prediction. The position is a full-time appointment, 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 7 hours per day. Flexible work hours and remote working arrangements are possible in consultation with the PIs.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Conduct studies that advance the science and practice of hydrological modeling.
  • Define a detailed hydrological modeling workflow for Canada, with higher resolution for the populated south and coarse resolution for the rest of Canada.
  • Prepare and configure computational domains within a multi-model simulation framework (HYPE, MESH, SUMMA), creating a reproducible workflow for reconfiguring models and extending tested workflows to all Canadian basins.
  • Establish a calibration strategy for ungauged catchments, collaborate with the sponsor team for calibration and processing, and minimize use of university-paid computational resources.
  • Perform internal event identification and build an event set for Canada, consulting on climate forcing variables, workflow, tools, and scientific methods.
  • Support the publication of scientific papers on hydrological modeling for Canadian climatic conditions, climate change impacts on flood risk, and participate in relevant conferences and workshops.
  • Prepare drafts of papers and reports as necessary.
  • Provide technical support for other team members through technical advice.
  • Recommend change to processes or procedures.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Ph.D. degree and at least three years of postdoctoral experience in hydrology, civil engineering, environmental science, computer science, data science, or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated record of high-quality research and publication.
  • In-depth knowledge of hydrological and water resources principles, modelling, and forecasting.
  • Experience handling large and heterogeneous geophysical datasets.
  • Strong competence in data preparation/analysis/visualization with Python, R, or a similar scripting and visualization language.
  • Competence in using Linux environments.
  • Experience with high performance computing.
  • Strong competence in programming with C/C++ or Fortran for model development & debugging.
  • Competence in software engineering best practices such as unit testing, use of modern version control systems, such as git, use of profilers / debuggers, software development etc.
  • Experience and dedication to open science.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and effectively in both spoken and written English.
  • Sharp analytical abilities and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities and record of positive contributions in a team environment.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, multi-task, and prioritize workload.
  • Interest in mentoring junior team members.

Application Deadline: August 20, 2024
