Dimensions

This position will be reporting to the Environmental Compliance Coordinator.

Purpose

To ensure compliance of all Porcupine property through sampling, monitoring, and inspections of the operations as well as assistance with required government reporting. This position incorporates several different sampling methods which include groundwater, surface water, dust, soil, and air monitoring. Visual inspections and monitoring of several operational and collection pond facilities are also required.

Safety & Sustainability Expectations

Being environmentally proactive during the development of new projects and for the existing operations. To maintain and promote a safe working atmosphere for employees, contractors, and the public. Promote and support the company’s Fatality Risk Management Program at the site level. Ensure that daily activities comply with company policy and standards.

Essential Duties
  1. Regulatory Compliance of Existing Properties (3 operating and numerous closed sites)
  2. Daily and weekly visual inspections of operations, recording water levels, compliance samples (Monitoring dam integrities)
  3. Assist with drone flight programs
  4. Ensure the air, surface water, and groundwater monitoring programs (internal and compliance) are completed in an organized and timely fashion.
  5. Maintain real-time cloud-based monitoring data and operability
  6. Assist in preparation of monthly, quarterly, annual reports for mine site, government and corporate office
  7. Assist in updating all internet-based compliance databases (MERS, MEWS, RPRA, E2, WTRS, etc.)
  8. Assist in managing hazardous and non-hazardous waste for disposal on and off Newmont Porcupine sites
  9. Assist in completion of compliance reports to the government agencies (ECA, PTTW etc.)
  10. Support the development of sampling programs and schedules
  11. Maintain proper logs of field data, prepare data for database entry
  12. Assist in environmental training for all staff and contractors (waste management, spill response, etc.)
  13. Support biodiversity and wildlife management initiatives
  14. Maintenance and calibration of environmental sampling equipment
Training & Experience

Bachelor of Environmental Science or Diploma in Environmental Technology field. 1-2 years in the mining industry or related experience with comprehensive exposure to sampling, monitoring, and compliance issues. Effective communication and organization skills. Ability to interact with internal staff. Ability to manage a wide variety of projects and timelines to meet tight time restraints. Valid G driver's license. Pleasure Craft Operator Card. Familiarity with Site Scan, MonitorPro, and Enablon are assets. Advanced pilot drone license is considered an asset.

Working Conditions

This position is a site-based role in Chapleau, ON. The schedule is 4 days on, 3 days off or 5 days on, 2 days off. Preference will be given to candidates that currently reside in Chapleau or are willing to relocate. Participation in emergency/spill on-call schedule is mandatory for this position. Must be willing to obtain an advanced pilot license for the operation of drones. Sampling programs encompass a large physical area in the vicinity of the operation; there is a significant amount of travel time required. Operating passenger vehicles, all-terrain vehicles, and boats are a requirement for this position. The successful candidate must be comfortable working independently and at times work in remote locations with a partner. We understand no candidate will meet every single desired qualification.
