The Recreation Therapist BSO is a critical role within our communities as it impacts the lives of residents and ignites the warmth of human connection.

As a Recreation Therapist BSO, your typical day will impact in the following ways:

  1. Providing and assessing for recreation therapy activities including outings in accordance with established policy, physician’s orders, and resident plan of care and within the scope of practice.
  2. Developing and sustaining a plan of care to meet residents’ assessed needs based on individual strengths, needs, and interests of residents.
  3. Communicating and promoting the activities of the department to residents, team members, families, volunteers, and the community to encourage collaborative participation in programs.
  4. Ensuring that thorough evaluation of assessments, intervention plans, program development, and program delivery is consistently completed to ensure the efficacy of recreation services.
  5. Identifying department learning needs and making provisions for appropriate education and continuing team member development.
  6. Participating in the recruitment, selection, orientation, development, and performance management of Recreation Department team members.
  7. Ongoing professional development both personally and professionally in relation to therapeutic recreation and staying current with the trends in the industry.
  8. Guiding recreation therapy assistants to ensure proper documentation is completed (e.g., MDS/RAI, Activity Pro). Observing facilitation of activities, engaging in reflective practice to ensure appropriate and thorough programming is taking place.
  9. Responsible for maintaining accurate and complete records of care delivered, including program development and program delivery.
  10. Performing other duties as assigned.

Must Haves

  1. University degree in Recreation/Leisure Studies, and/or a degree in Health Sciences with a post-graduate degree in Therapeutic Recreation, from a recognized University or equivalent education and experience.
  2. Member in good standing with Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (TRO).
  3. Be a registered Recreation Therapist (R/TRO) or in process of registration with TRO.
  4. Minimum of 3 years’ experience working with seniors.
  5. Qualifications must meet the definition under MDS-RAI guidelines.
  6. All applicants must successfully pass the prescribed Vulnerable Sector Check.
