Overview

This position is located in Hay River, NT

The Manager, Engineering Design, is responsible and accountable for the supervision of technical staff and for the ongoing operation and administration of the Design Group. The Design Group provides engineering design services for capital projects and technical input & design on maintenance projects. The Design Group is responsible for the complete detailed electrical, automation, and mechanical design related to hydro, diesel, natural gas, wind, and solar generating stations and supporting infrastructure. Engineering design work related to substations and transmission and distribution systems is also required. In addition to subordinate staff, the Manager will appoint and direct external consultants in all engineering disciplines. Civil designs will typically be managed using consultants.

Under the direction of the Chief Project & Engineering Officer or Director of Project & Engineering:

  • Leads the daily operation of the Design Group; is responsible for ensuring the organization's Mission, Vision, and Values are articulated and understood by employees. Must lead the staff toward the achievement of the divisional goals and objectives. Operates as a supervisor for direct reports, which includes setting objectives, assigning duties, assessing, and managing individual performance to deliver results.

Responsibilities:

  • Manages and directs subordinate staff and external consultants involved in electrical, mechanical, and civil design, construction, commissioning, and related research of capital projects. Capital projects and maintenance work include hydro, diesel, and natural gas plants, substations, transmission, and distribution systems, and at times residual heat, solar, and wind energy.
  • Technical management of electrical and mechanical disciplines and management of external consultants for civil designs on maintenance support activities that are ongoing in the Regions.
  • Performs technical reviews and provides quality assurance, concerning applicable codes, standards, and design accuracy, on all hydro and thermal designs, specifications, quantity and cost estimates, tenders and contracts prepared in-house or by engineering consultants. As Group Manager, signs the Corporation’s Engineering Permit Stamp for in-house mechanical and electrical design drawings and related technical documents.
  • Provides technical support and advice on all hydrothermal, residual heat, maintenance, and alternative energy design and generation issues, as requested by the Asset Managers and other engineering staff in the Regions.
  • Prepares and administers the annual operation budget for the Design Group. Submits the budget for review and approval to the Director.
  • Hire subordinate staff in consultation with the CPEO. Conducts annual performance appraisals and sets out annual goals and objectives for each subordinate employee. Performs staff discipline by NTPC’s Collective Agreement. Assists in dealing with step one of the grievance procedures.
  • Initiates, develops, implements, and maintains, as applicable and through subordinate staff, suitable corporate mechanical and electrical engineering and maintenance standards for the safe and reliable operation of hydro, diesel, and natural gas generating stations, alternative energy systems, and residual heat distribution systems.
  • Provide, regularly to the CPEO, written and verbal progress reports on Design Group issues. Prepares, submits, and/or presents to Executive Management, written technical reports, project briefs, and other technical and Section related documentation.
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering with P.Eng designation and at least 10 years of related electrical or mechanical design, project engineering/management, construction commissioning, and operation experience at the senior level, of which at least four (4) years are directly related to hydro or diesel or renewable (Wind & Solar) electric power generation with a regulated utility. This will include conventional design and a level of problem-solving ability beyond standard issues. Equivalencies in experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of demonstrated leadership skills in organizing, directing, and overseeing the work of subordinate staff.
  • Above average verbal and written communication and organizational skills.
  • Extensive knowledge and skill in electrical, control, and instrumentation, renewable energy, and mechanical activities for design, construction, commissioning, and operation purposes.
  • Accomplished computer skills utilizing MS Office Suite, Outlook, etc.
  • Proven administrative and budget skills related to electric utilities policies and procedures.
  • Proven ability to critically review, analyse, and interpret highly technical information, designs, and consultant reports, including engineering accuracy, cost implications, and operational feasibility.
  • Proven ability to motivate and inspire subordinate staff in day-to-day activities and special projects.
  • Above average interpersonal skills and ability to work and manage in a team environment.
  • Must be capable of breaking down complex design issues into simple blocks and passing the knowledge to sub-ordinates.
  • Must have a class 5 driver's license.
  • Must be able to provide a satisfactory criminal record check.

Salary for this position ranges from $78.42/hr. - $98.03/hr plus location and accommodation allowances of approximately $8,023 per annum. This position is located in Hay River, NT. Relocation assistance may be provided.
