We are looking for a highly motivated person to fill the position of Manager, Commodity Tax Accounting. This person will report to the Director, Commodity Taxes / Accounting, Audit and Compliance.

Scope


The Manager, Commodity Tax Accounting position will be responsible for the accounting of commodity taxes and passenger taxes, fees and charges for Air Canada and affiliated companies, with a focus on taxes collected on revenues.

Responsibilities include update tax logic and tax process, audit of accounts, identification of tax recovery opportunities, mitigation of tax liability and risk as well as process of automation whenever possible.


Key Functions and Responsibilities

Tax Accounting

  • Monitor tax introductions and changes to existing reservations / ticketing / accounting and employee travel systems, as well as internal business processes
  • Monitor ongoing tax compliance in reservations, travel and accounting systems
Oversee Passenger Revenue Accounting (PRA) system tax audit logic, recommending and supporting the design, testing and implementation of changes

  • Oversee Cargo Revenue Accounting system tax audit logic, recommending and supporting the design, testing and implementation of changes
  • Ensure Tax compliance with PAICE and fuel system migration
  • Ensure accurate accounting for tax liabilities (federal, excise, provincial, state sales & use taxes, fuel and carbon taxes, valueadded taxes, passenger ticket taxes, fees, and charges) and maintain complete audit trails in compliance with corporate guidelines and legislation requirements
  • Design and implement corrective measures arising from tax audit assessments and findings in regard to taxes collected on revenues. Ensure subsequent compliance
  • Assist the Director, Commodity Taxes in implementing appropriate guidelines / procedures to ensure Air Canada and its subsidiaries are compliant with commodity tax laws
  • Implement strategies to minimize tax liabilities in accordance with current tax laws
  • Keep up to date on current changes in commodity taxes legislation
  • Collaborate with Finance, Revenue Accounting, Cargo Accounting, Internal Audit, and other departments as required on tax issues.
  • Develop guidelines, training materials, job aids for the Tax Department as required
  • Review and preparation of all appropriate tax account reconciliations in collaboration with the Manager Commodity Tax Accounting & Audits
  • Assist Director, Commodity Taxes/ Audits, Compliance & Accounting with related duties.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Business or Finance,
  • CPA designation is an asset
  • Completion of GST/HST indept tax course is an asset
  • Minimum 7 years of experience in the commodity tax field. Experience in the transportation industry is an asset
  • Demonstrated experience and comfort dealing with governmental authorities
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to be a team player
  • Proven leadership skills
  • Strong analytical skills combined with a demonstrated ability to handle multiple files.
  • Excellent MS excel skills and MS database knowledge/similar tools (IDEA, Power query and Power BI) with technical skills in manipulating and analyzing large datasets.
  • Good organizational skills and ability to work under pressure
  • Knowledge of all Canadian and provincial commodity tax legislation (e.g., GST/HST, QST, PST, Excise Tax, Fuel Taxes)
  • Knowledge of US sales and use tax legislation, as well as International Commodity Taxes and VAT is an asset
  • Excellent communication skills, oral and written
