Reporting to the GS, Infrastructure Field Operations, the Supervisor contributes to the City Operations vision by performing a dual faceted role.

Firstly, as a member of the Section Extended Leadership Team and operating within a collective leadership accountability, the role is focused on creating the conditions for success of the strategy, priorities and direction of the section and unit.

Secondly, the Supervisor is accountable for implementing the human, social, technical and operational systems required to carry out the work of the functional area on a day to day basis.

Working in an integrated business model, the Supervisor, Active Pathways is accountable for:

  • Leading a team of leads and staff in the delivery of ongoing service for the winter operation of the mobility network within the City
  • Direct supervision and day to day oversight of labour, equipment and materials used to deliver service
  • Monitoring and managing risk to the operations as well as to the City and its reputation
  • Ensuring that all City and OH&S safety standards and guidelines are implemented and enforced
  • Reporting directly to the General Supervisor, Field Operations are approximately 610 Leads and staff with a total of up to 300 FTEs (permanent and seasonal staff) at peak season
  • Active Pathways North includes:
  • Snow and Ice Control deicing, antiicing and clearing snow and ice from active pathways including: parking lots, sidewalks, paths, bike networks, stairs, etc. as well as piloting alternative snow and ice control methods as required
  • Planning seasonal preparation for the SNIC teams, document control and revision, training management, site inspection and planning, ongoing employee engagement
  • The outcomes of a high performing work group, supported and led by the Supervisors include:
  • Work groups that operate with the trust and confidence of the City Operations Leadership Team (COLT) and the Parks and Roads Services leadership team
  • An ability to plan, execute, monitor, control and report on the effective and efficient use of resources
  • Work groups that maintain a high degree of employee engagement

Qualifications:

  • Degree or diploma in Engineering, Landscape Architecture, Environmental Science, Planning, Business or Project Management, or a closely related discipline
  • Equivalencies with extensive years of experience may also be considered
  • 5 years progressively responsible experience in overseeing service delivery and experience with snow and ice control
  • Experience in a leadership role within a large, complex organization, preferably unionized
  • Experience managing and working with external contractors
  • Experience working with large seasonal operations and staff change over is strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated leadership skills including the ability to delegate and empower others, work collaboratively and develop strong working relationships
  • Strong business acumen
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including writing and interpreting reports and briefs, presentation/public speaking skills and the ability to interact well with a diverse group of leaders, colleagues, staff and citizens
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steeltoed boots, is a requirement for this position
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Must arrange own transportation to be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy which may require business auto insurance

Hours of Work: 36.9 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Hours of work may vary including evenings and weekends.
