Title: Director of Finance

Job Profile:

Under the direction of the Chief Executive Officer ("CEO") the Director of Finance, is a

hands-on role responsible for leading the management of all financial and compliance

aspects of SmartICE. Complimentary tasks are working with the board of directors to

prepare for board meetings, funder requests and assisting with executing the strategic

directions as set forth by the board.

Key Responsibilities:

Financial Operations

● Responsible for all areas of financial reporting of the organization and its

Foundation, including compiling and presenting reports, budgets, business plans,

commentaries and financial statements for the CEO, Audit and Finance

Committee, and Board of Directors.

● Monitor the day-to-day financial operations within the organization (invoicing,

account classification, and other transactions).

● Manage SmartICE's financial accounting, monitoring, and reporting system.

● Review and follow up with outstanding receivables and payables.

● Complete monthly bank reconciliations.

● Analyze expenditures and develop (and maintain) realistic budget plans,

reviewing and updating as required.

● Perform monthly and quarterly salary claims.

● Oversee company payroll including biweekly RRSP contributions and monthly

group benefits bills.

● Maintain and govern the SmartICE Foundation accounting system (includes

recording invoices, paying invoices, bank reconciliations, etc.; as well as

assisting the auditor with annual statements.

● Develop and maintain relationships with vendors, government partners and

stakeholders.

● Correspond with the Business Development team, discussing company plans

and agreeing on future paths to be taken. As well as providing this team with

project reports as needed and review (and analyze) costs incurred compared to

budgeted.

● Suggest ways to reduce costs, streamline reporting processes, enhance

revenues and improve profits.

Compliance

● Assist the external auditors with the annual Audit process.

● Liaise with the auditors as necessary throughout the fiscal year to ensure

appropriate processes are being followed.

● Ensure compliance with accounting policies and regulatory requirements.

● Prepare and maintain government remittances/fillings, accounts receivable,

expenses, accounts payable and payroll transactions.

Other Responsibilities

● Develop a thorough understanding of social enterprise, the not-for-profit sector,

and Indigenous culture.

● Oversee special finance projects as required.

● Other duties as assigned.

Academic and Functional Requirements:

● Completion of a Bachelors Degree and 7-10 years progressive experience in

accounting related experience with 4+ years in leadership roles.

● Proficient in Quickbooks.

● Strong computer literacy including effective working skills of Microsoft Word,

Excel, and PowerPoint.

● A solid understanding of financial statistics and accounting principles.

● A solid understanding of project accounting.

● Strong attention to detail and good analytical skills.

● Ability to work flexibly, as time zones may result in meetings going outside of

standard work hours.

Assets:

● A Chartered Professional Accountant ("CPA") designation is an asset.

● Experience working in Canada's Arctic, northern communities or with Rights

Holders is an asset.
