The Engineering, Parks and Environment Department is looking for a temporary full-time Planner2 for approximately one year to lead the implementation of the City's parks projects.


Reporting to the Section Manager, Environment & Parks Planning, you will be responsible for a variety of policy, planning and construction projects such as sports fields, trails, playgrounds and habitat restoration.

This will involve preparing park plans, leading public consultation processes, design development, tendering and project management.

You will contribute to the development of the capital plan, review development proposals, prepare reports and recommendations, draft related by-laws and policy proposals for submission to City Council and liaise with a variety of internal and external contacts.

You will also co-ordinate and attend public meetings, attend City Council and Committee meetings (when required), supervise a team of professional and technical staff, oversee consultant work, and provide expertise to larger-scale capital projects.


You will have considerable knowledge of practices, principles and techniques applicable to urban planning, landscape architecture, parks and greenways planning and design, the ability to understand and explain technical concepts and plans, the ability to coordinate with Engineering and Parks Operations, and provide professional advice to other departments, City Council, and the public.

You possess excellent communication skills and your qualifications include a university degree in an appropriate discipline, plus a post-graduate degree in Landscape Architecture, Community/Regional Planning, or other related areas with professional design experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Membership or eligibility for membership in the Planning Institute of British Columbia, Canadian Institute of Planners or the British Columbia Society of Landscape Architects is a requirement.

Previous supervisory experience and a valid Class 5 BC Driver's License are required. A Project Management Certificate would be an asset.


For temporary full-time positions of 8 months or longer, a City employee who is successful on the posting will have the right to revert to their former position.

Salary:

$54.44 to $64.47 per hour
(Pay Grade 30 – January 2024 rates)
This position has a pay structure with five steps, which increase annually.

Hours of Work:

The City of North Vancouver currently works on a compressed work schedule of 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, with one scheduled day off (Monday or Friday) approximately each three-week scheduling cycle.
