The Department of Justice oversees justice administration, including policing, community justice, victims services, and corrections in the Northwest Territories. Our goal is to uphold justice while respecting community values and promoting community involvement.

Job Information

We are seeking a dedicated Traditional Addictions Counsellor to provide supportive addictions counselling and lead group programs at SMCC in Hay River. Working closely with various teams including Case Management, Elders, Social Workers, and Community Addictions Counsellors, you will deliver addiction services using a culturally relevant and holistic approach.

Key requirements for this role include:

  • Specialized knowledge in addictions and counselling;
  • Familiarity with the traditional values and customs of Indigenous peoples in the NWT;
  • Understanding of the residential school system and trauma-informed care;
  • Strong communication and interpersonal abilities.

These qualifications are typically achieved through:
Either a diploma in a Social Science field with 2 years of addictions experience, or a certificate in addictions counselling with 3 years of relevant experience. We also welcome equivalent combinations of education and experience.

The ideal candidate will hold First Aid and CPR certifications, along with a Class 4 driver's license.
