Outreach Counsellor and Advocate (Moncton)


Description


With a strong background in mental health and substance use issues, criminal justice, and knowledge of gender-based violence, you will be excited about working with an agency that values collaboration, dignity, compassion, innovation, and trust.


You will engage with an enthusiastic, energetic and supportive EFryNB inter-disciplinary team, to provide counselling and programming support that incorporates a mobile, flexible and virtual approach for women and gender-diverse persons who are facing interconnected areas of need: Gender-based violence, mental health, substance use, homelessness, poverty, and criminalization.

You will develop and facilitate wellness and soft-skill programs that take a trauma-informed and holistic approach.


You will assist women and gender-diverse individuals who are involved, or at risk of being involved, in the criminal and family courts in Moncton by offering individualized support, information and referrals.

You will improve access to justice for some of the most underserved, vulnerable, and marginalized members of New Brunswick society.

Because EFry is a learning organization, you will also provide and participate in in-service training for staff and volunteers as required.


Duties

  • Keep informed through research and engagement with those EFryNB supports to understand common unmet client needs regarding criminal law information and associated supports.
  • Collaborate with women and genderdiverse people on setting goals and provide supportive, traumainformed counselling.
  • Facilitate one to one and small group sessions, as required.
  • Collaborate and foster relationships with community service providers who can offer best practices to meet each person's needs as required.
  • Offer court accompaniment for criminal, mental health, and family courts, oneonone support, referrals, and information.
  • Counsel or aid family members to assist them in understanding, dealing with, or supporting those transitioning through the court system.
  • Collaborate with the Volunteer Court Liaison Program (VCLP) Coordinator to coordinate scheduling and support in Moncton courts
  • Maintain strict confidentiality guidelines regarding conversations and referrals.

Skills and qualifications

  • Relevant postsecondary degree (social work, criminology, law, education) and/or has a minimum of five (5) years' experience working with criminalized women.
  • Strong understanding of the complex systemic and individual issues impacting criminalized women and their families.
  • Has a strong desire to contribute to making change for vulnerable, marginalized, criminalized women.
  • Ability to manage demanding interpersonal situations and respond with good judgement and understanding.
  • Can bring a trauma, gender, and culturallyinformed lens to the work.
  • Comfortable facilitating small groups.
  • Excellent communications skills, written and oral, including listening. Being bilingual an asset.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Has a passion for learning, discovering, and working in a communitybased nonprofit organization.

Must reside in or around the Moncton area.

This position, situated in Moncton, NB will require some travel. A car is an asset.

Reports to Executive Director / works with Advocacy and Education Coordinator

This is a one-year position with possibility of being extended. Our office adheres to current health protocols as determined by the NB Government and Horizon Heath.

Hours of work: 35 hours/week; Hourly wage: $28.

Salary:
$28.00 per hour
