Position Overview

Responsible for providing a range of communications-related support to City departments, including strategy development and implementation of communications products. Supports the activities of the Senior Leadership Team and client/partner departments by providing communications advice, consultation and assistance on corporate projects and initiatives, particularly as they relate to editorial content being communicated through a variety of formats, with a focus on internal communications support.

Responsibilities

Communications Strategy and Internal Customer Service
  • Serves as the department's principal point of contact for client needs.
  • Provides ongoing internal customer service, advice and consultation to client/partner departments in the development and implementation of departmental and special project communications strategies, as assigned, while maintaining the City's brand integrity.
  • Participates in the development of corporate communication strategies and the business planning process on various aspects of communications, with a specific emphasis on supporting the Partner Communications Group.
  • Assists in the implementation of all aspects of the initiatives undertaken by Communications, Marketing and Engagement.
Communications Planning
  • Develops new internal communications products and helps prepare appropriate and timely reports to track and measure the effectiveness of internal communications offerings and products.
  • Researches, writes and edits information and internal promotional materials, as assigned, that are designed to enhance the corporate image and awareness of programs and services to employees and various stakeholders, and co-ordinates the distribution of these materials.
  • Supports and co-ordinates the preparation of web-based and other content received from Council, Senior Leadership, City departments and other information providers to ensure consistency and adherence to corporate communication standards where they apply.
  • Collaborates with the Marketing and Creatives Services Group and the Office of the Chief Information Officer to facilitate the development of website modules to present dynamic content for the VOL intranet, including interactive features, multimedia and online surveys, among others.
  • Responsible for producing, scripting and coordinating internal multimedia opportunities for the corporation.
  • Supports departmental web-based content, in accordance with corporate priorities, standards and best practices.
  • Produces content and design elements for internal presentations, information modules, etc. using web-based and other technologies and formats.
  • Identifies emerging web-based and eCommunications technologies to improve the effectiveness of the corporation's internal strategic communications, including options relating to content management.
  • Assists the Media and External Communications group in coordinating the distribution of news releases, as assigned.
Interactions with Others
  • Acts as a member of the Public Information Team during emergencies in accordance with the Emergency Communications Plan.
Qualifications and Experience
  • University Degree in Journalism, Public Relations, Communications, Public Administration, Political Science or suitable equivalent.
  • Minimum of five (5) years' related experience, with a sound working knowledge of professional communication techniques and practices.
  • IABC (International Association of Business Communicators) or CPRS (Canadian Public Relations Association)accreditation is considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply the principles of new technologies to support and enhance a wide variety of communications initiatives.
  • Thorough working knowledge of computer software packages including Microsoft Office Suite (i.e. Word, PowerPoint).
  • Thorough working knowledge of Canadian Press Style standards.
  • Excellent organizational and communications skills, both oral and written, and the ability to perform well under pressure.
  • Ability to deal professionally and effectively with all Stakeholders, including Council, Staff at all levels and the media.
  • Knowledge of, and demonstrated ability in, the city's core competencies and relevant functional competencies.
  • A valid Ontario 'G' driver's license, in good standing, with access to a reliable vehicle for corporate use.
  • Flexible to work evenings and weekends as required.
