Terrestrial Land Snails Survey Crew

Position Description
The BC Conservation Foundation is seeking energetic, stewardship
- and community-minded individuals to work on a terrestrial land snail project with South Coast BC Parks. In this position you will complete surveys focused on documenting the presence of Oregon Forest Snail, Pacific Side Band Snail, and Threaded Vertigo Snail within Cultus Lake (Maple Bay, and Watt Creek), Chilliwack Lake, and Bridal Veil Falls Provincial Parks.

Duties and Deliverables

  • Complete field surveys for three target snails within the three BC parks mentioned above.
  • Refine snail habitat (focused on the three snails) habitat mapping, further enhancing understanding of the snails' habitats, and supporting effective conservation efforts.
  • Specifically at Watt Creek and Maple Bay, conduct surveys for Oregon Forest Snail and implement a translocation and monitoring study to assess the success of habitat restoration efforts.
  • Support BC Parks/WLRS government staff in providing training sessions for park facility operators, operational staff, and invasive species experts, covering topics such as snail identification, tagging, and tracking techniques specifically designed to protect atrisk snail species.
  • Submit final report outlining findings and recommendations for the future.

Qualifications

  • Familiarity with the conservation of atrisk terrestrial land snails in South Coast BC Parks.
  • Undergraduate degree or diploma in one of the following areas or a related field: Natural sciences, conservation biology, biology, or environmental studies, with a strong demonstrated interest or experience in organizational management.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and problem solve with mínimal supervision.

Asset

  • Excellent Microsoft Office skills.
  • Basic invertebrate identification skills.
  • Habitat assessment skills.
  • Minimum 6 months experience in invertebrate conservation surveys techniques.
  • Knowledge of plants within coastal BC ecosystems.
  • Valid Class 5 BC drivers' license.
  • Valid OFA level 1 First Aid or equivalent.
  • Selfstarter, able to plan and direct your own work, work independently without supervision but also a team player.
  • Physical fitness to complete strenuous field work under all weather conditions.

Added Skills

  • Experience in operating, managing, and downloading data from GPS units and digital cameras.
  • Ability to collect voucher specimens and record field data.
