Reporting to the Director, Accessible Learning & Inclusion, the incumbent assesses functional limitations to determine and approve academic accommodations for students with all types of disabilities (e.g., physical, medical, sensory, learning, and mental health). The incumbent facilitates and promotes successful transitions and a learning environment that is conducive to academic success and inclusiveness. The incumbent will provide guidance to students at various stages from program acceptance to graduation and makes the necessary referrals to all areas of support throughout their academic journey.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Conducting intake appointments and verifying documentation (medical, psychological, neurological, psychoeducational) to determine student eligibility for academic accommodations and support services;
  • Identifying appropriate accommodation plans to address students' functional limitations while upholding bona fide academic essential requirements;
  • Working with students to explore options/discuss solutions while promoting self-empowerment and self-advocacy;
  • Liaising and negotiating on students' behalf regarding academic accommodations and accessibility issues;
  • Coordinating and facilitating transition or information sessions and workshops for students/parents, guardians/case workers etc. on identifying and accessing services within the college community;
  • Consulting with faculty/staff and acting as a resource to the campus community;
  • Researching, developing and coordinating appropriate programs/services to accommodate students with disabilities;
  • Providing information to external agencies about Accessible Learning at Sheridan including policies and procedures, as requested and assigned;
  • Facilitating the acquisition of and coordinating Sign Language Interpreters and Computerized Note Takers;
  • Performing other related duties, as required.

About You

You have the skills and knowledge to work with an increasingly diverse student and staff population as well as a proven commitment to anti-oppression, equity,and inclusion.

You have a client service focus with an aptitude to make connections, support others, provide excellent customer service and might identify as a community builder.

You have excellent communication, facilitation, outreach and presentation skills with an ability to influence at all levels and obtain buy-in when diverse needs and competing priorities exist.

You have an ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality, work with diverse populations, respond to needs in a sensitive and positive manner, and utilize excellent judgment, analytical and problem-solving skills.

The successful candidate will also meet the following qualifications:

  • 4-year degree Occupational Therapy, Social Work, Disability Studies, Special Education, Psychology, or a related discipline.
  • 3 years of experience working in a setting providing intake and direct services to individuals with disabilities, preferably in an educational environment (equivalency to be considered)
  • Applied knowledge of providing accommodations based on recommendations in medical, psychoeducational, neuropsychological, and other assessments is preferred.
  • Knowledge of a variety of legislation governing disability supports at the post-secondary level (Human Rights Commission's policies and guidelines, AODA, FIPPA, etc.) and knowledge of appropriate post-secondary accommodations, assistive technology and college programs and services.
