Main Purpose and Function
Shelter Supervisor supports the Centre's mandate of providing a safe, welcoming, professional and accessible environment for patrons and staff.

The position does this through leadership in relationship building, patron engagement, and using a conflict-positive approach to resolving issues and concerns in the Centre within the framework of established guidelines.

The Shelter Supervisor is a working supervisory position, with responsibilities in:

supervising Shelter Staff on shift; administrative work overseeing shelter operations; floor and Information Desk support; and supporting the safety and maintenance at the Gathering Place Community Centre.

This position works a compressed 4-day work week, 3:00pm to midnight, Wednesday through Saturday. Hours and location of work may be changed in accordance with operational requirements and the Collective Agreement.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs daytoday site/shift shelter operations aimed at achieving the Gathering Place mandate of a safe, welcoming, professional and accessible environment for patrons and staff including training new staff, updating staff on new procedures; direct supervision of workday positions/rotations/breaks/program support; reporting/documenting; daily morning huddles; creating documents of procedures and policies for distribution, tracking employee training.
  • Conducts scheduling and payroll.
  • Monitors the performance of shelter staff which includes providing direction to the Shelter Attendants and Information Clerks.
  • Assists with Occupational Health and Safety and WorkSafe matters.
  • Liaises with emergency services on shelter and medical related matters.
  • Leads a variety of security incident related responses, including near miss and critical incident situations and with patrons who are barred from the shelter while keeping others safe.
  • Performs regular shelter functions including access restrictions, patrols, program support and clerical duties as required, including reporting building maintenance and repair requirements.
  • Revises shelter procedures with reference to investigations, helping define new procedures and policies in consultation with management and rest of shelter team.
  • Orders shelter related supplies.
  • Performs other duties as required

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Completion of Grade 12, supplemented by Security related courses and sound related experience including some experience in a supervisory capacity or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Experience and knowledge in working with socially and economically disadvantaged communities is preferred.
  • Occupational First Aid Level 2 Certification is required.
  • BST Security Training Certificate is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of shelter policies, procedures, techniques, principles and standards as they relate to the work performed.
  • Working knowledge of investigative techniques.
  • Working knowledge of the organization of the City, the general functions the Centre, and the nature of services performed.
  • Working knowledge of office practices and procedures and the use of Microsoft Office suite.
  • Working knowledge of department budgeting activities; planning, monitoring, tracking.
  • Ability to coordinate security operations and develop related plans.
  • Ability to select, train and supervise the work of shelter staff; provide training and guidance to same.
  • Ability to followup on complex incident reports and to investigate incidents and recommend corrective action.
  • Ability to train civic staff in a variety of shelter related topics.
  • Ability to establish, maintain and prepare a variety of records, files and reports related to the work.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external contacts.
  • Excellent verbal deescalation, community engagement, effective relationship building, and conflict resolution are required.
  • A high level of initiative and skill working both independently and with a team while multitasking in a fast paced environment.
