The Psychologist provides psychological services to the Shapedown Program and to children and youth and their families with associated psychiatric, developmental, behavioural and other problems. Working collaboratively with the health care team, participates in research, quality improvement and risk management projects and the development of community models, protocols and educational materials for the treatment of disordered eating and obesity.


What you'll do

  • Plans and organizes the provision of psychological services to the assigned program and patient group in consultation with the Director of Psychology and the Shapedown Program Coordinator. Participates in activities of coordinating the team as required for the program's delivery.
  • Initiates and carries out creative research, either independently or in conjunction with other professionals, to investigate children and youth with disordered eating and obesity, and related mental and health disorders and the impact of disordered eating on the individual and on the family.
  • Organizes and presents information for both research and educational purposes. Prepares submissions, and develops and delivers topical presentations to multidisciplinary, local, national, or international audiences in various formats.
  • Coordinates and delivers a comprehensive range of psycho diagnostic assessments, including assessments of cognitive, social/emotional adjustment, executive function and learning and development, and associated conditions for children and adolescents seen in the Shape Down Program.
  • Provides a range of treatment services for this patient group. Psychotherapeutic Interventions may include such activities as individual or group therapy and cognitive-behaviour management. Can develop and use manualized individual and family interventions Documents assessments, treatment plans and outcomes and advises other members of the treatment team.
  • Plays an integral role in provincial outreach and capacity building, by meeting with hospital, community, academic and health authority partners to provide information on the Shape Down program, and identifying areas in which collaboration would be meaningful. Also assesses needs for training /education about disordered eating and provides resources and contacts as necessary.

What you bring

Qualifications

  • A Doctorate in Psychology and Registration (or eligibility) with the College of Psychologists of British Columbia. If eligible, Registration will be completed within one year of the hiring date.
  • Certification as a Shapedown Weight Management Program provider.
  • Recent related experience in child, adolescent, psycho diagnostic, clinical and/or health care environment.
  • Experience working with children, adolescents, and families with disordered eating and obesity.

  • Ability to provide effective clinical care to the target patient population.
  • Ability to initiate and carry out research
  • Ability to provide clinical and professional supervision and to provide instruction and teaching.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Commitment to develop knowledge and understanding of legislative obligations and provincial commitments found in the foundational documents - including Truth & Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Reclaiming Power and Place Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls Calls for Justice (2019), the Declaration Act Action Plan and Remembering Keegan: A First Nations Case Study - and how they intersect across the health care system.
  • Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act
