Job Summary

Respiratory Evaluation Sciences Program (RESP) is a health economics and outcomes research program within the Collaboration for Outcomes Research and Evaluation at UBC that contributes to new knowledge in terms of the long-term burden of chronic respiratory diseases and the effectiveness of interventions in reducing such burden.

This new position will be involved in all aspects of design and development, with a focus on decision-analytic modeling and health economic evaluation of interventions in respiratory medicine.

This will require development and maintenance of statistical modelling and decision-making software.

Other responsibilities include developing and evaluating study designs, developing statistical models and performing analysis on clinical and administrative health data, writing reports and manuscripts, and presenting results to a multidisciplinary audience.

Organizational Status

The Research Scientist will work closely with, and will report to the co-director of the RESP program (Dr. Kate Johnson)

Work Performed

Major Responsibilities:

  • Consulting with Principal Investigators on study design
  • Developing decision analytic models of respiratory disease in statistical software based on literature searches and statistical analyses of data
  • Performing deterministic and probabilistic costeffectiveness analysis using Markov Models and Monte Carlo simulations
  • Preparing the final analytical dataset required for the planned statistical analyses.
  • Conducting the planned statistical analyses and modelling to predict the outcomes and burden of respiratory diseases, and assist the decisionmaking process.
  • Ensuring the security and integrity of data by developing and implementing protocols and software for proper management and archiving of statistical codes and final analytical datasets
  • Developing approaches and techniques for the solution of problems. Communicates aspects of complex problems so that appropriate decisions can be made by the research team. Designs and performs tasks to avoid inappropriate assumptions.
  • Designing, developing, testing, deploying, maintaining, and improving statistical software packages, and web apps.
  • Performing advanced statistical analysis on BC administrative health data to study burden of respiratory diseases, gaps in care, and realworld effectiveness of treatments.
  • Participating in the preparation of scientific manuscripts, as well as interim and final reports as required by the funding agencies.
  • Supervision of junior staff who will help with the development of web apps
  • Other duties relating to the role of Research Scientist, as required.
Consequence of Error/Judgement

The Research Scientist will be the primary person in charge of designing and implementing the research projects. This entails a great deal of independence and autonomy in decision making. The principal investigators will periodically check the work performed by the Research Scientist.

The task requires the highest level of ethical integrity and analytical precision. Poor judgment in exercising such standards can have grave consequences. If undetected, mistakes can find their way into the scientific domain and affect patient care.

When detected, analytical mistakes can result in extensive and lengthy process of correcting the scientific reports and be damaging to the reputation of the team.

Supervision Received

The Research Scientist will report directly to the RESP co-Principal Investigator Dr. Kate Johnson

Significant content expertise and support is available, both in the relevant clinical areas, and in the statistical methodology and expertise with data management.

The applicant will join an active and productive and growing research unit and professional development of the team members is highly valued.

Supervision Given

Minimum Qualifications

Post-graduate degree in Statistics. Minimum of three years of related experience in research analysis, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
