Highlights of the job

We are hiring up to one (1) Full Time, Temporary Power System Technician (Relay) in Edmonton, AB. The position duration is up to 11 months.

This position works on the Transmission Operations Protection & SCADA team and directly reports to the Protection & Control/SCADA Manager.


A Power System Technician installs, maintains, calibrates, troubleshoots, repairs, modifies and commissions various types of protective relays, and substation protection and control circuits.

This includes all protective relay systems within EPCOR's Distribution and Transmission network, substations, and various customer locations.

What you'd be responsible for

  • Leading a team using strong interpersonal and communication skills to train, instruct, and assist in the technical orientation of other personnel.
  • Planning and organizing maintenance and capital projects such as project schedules, safe work plans, materials, outage requirements, and isolation points.
  • Exhibiting a safe, environmentally conscious, customer focused and professional work ethic at all times.
  • Demonstrating knowledge of EPCOR's electrical system, protective relaying schemes, and communication protocols.
  • Using a wide variety of test equipment to ensure proper operation of substation Protection, Control & SCADA devices.
  • Interpreting drawing packages and analyze test reports to complete capital construction, maintenance, repairs and troubleshoot issues.
  • Problem solving and analyzing to respond to emergency situations in a logical and reasoned manner even under strict deadlines.
  • Conducting hazard assessments, and taking control over emergency situations to ensure work site safety.
  • Adhering to proper safety regulations and safe work procedures.
  • Prioritizing job, tasks, and allocating resources effectively.
  • Ensuring the executing of job plans and accommodating unanticipated technical and resource challenges.
  • Mentoring and coaching team members.
  • Liaising with internal and external stakeholders and building and maintaining professional working relationships.
  • Assisting with Protection and Control related duties.
What's required to be successful

  • Successfully attained a high school diploma (GED, or equivalent level of secondary education).
  • Journeyman Power Systems Electrician certificate.
  • 5+ years of recent Journeyman Power System Electrician experience in Transmission/Distribution Substations.
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Motor Vehicle Operator's License, with 6 or fewer demerits, and ability to qualify for and maintain a valid EPCOR driver's permit.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and advanced ability in relay testing using Omicron Test Universe software interface; and IEC61850 protocol.
  • Demonstrated understanding of EPCOR's electrical system, Protective Relaying Schemes, Communication Protocols, and Relay setting interpretation/programming.
  • Ability to use a wide variety of test equipment, and interpret drawing packages and analyze test reports.
  • Proven proficiency in computer programs (i.e. Teams, Work, Excel and Outlook).
  • Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills with the ability to respond to emergency situations in a logical and reasoned manner even under strict deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Exhibits supervisory and leadership ability.
  • Good physical condition to meet the physical demands of the position.
  • Clearance on preplacement medical and drug/alcohol testing may be required.
  • Clearance on background check requirements related to ARS CIP.
