Duties

As part of their duties, the Aquatic Ecologist Team Leader, will:

  • Provide leadership, science-based advice or recommendations to other Parks Canada employees, Indigenous partners, external stake holders and other partners on the conservation and management of freshwater species and ecosystems consistent with the goals and objectives of the Southwestern Ontario Field Unit.
  • Evaluate and analyze technical information and data on ecological integrity and management effectiveness and participate in strategic planning and project development for ecosystem restoration and conservation across the Field Unit.
  • Actively participate in the preparation and review of Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) status reports and species assessments, and documents relating to the administration of the Species at Risk Act (SARA).
  • Participate in the coordination and communication of resource conservation activities within Point Pelee's wetland ecosystems, including the ongoing Ecological Integrity Monitoring Program and marsh restoration project.
  • Work collaboratively with Caldwell First Nation, Walpole Island First Nation, and the Marsh Community of Practice to advance current initiatives and develop new projects/research.
  • Supervise staff, providing oversight, mentorship, and work planning.
  • Travel to other areas administered by Parks Canada and to other natural areas managed by local First Nations, partners, and stakeholders.


The work could involve interdisciplinary collaboration, research and monitoring, preparation of reports and science-based recommendations on topics related to freshwater biodiversity conservation, aquatic connectivity, species at risk recovery, marsh and coastal restoration, climate change adaptation, resource management, and others.

This position will be based in Point Pelee National Park, within the Southwestern Ontario Field Unit.

Parks Canada's Southwestern Ontario Field Unit is a geographical area that encompasses approximately 30,000 km2 of Canada's unique natural and cultural heritage.

From the picturesque Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, to the most Southern point of Canada at Point Pelee National Park, the Southwestern Ontario Field Unit offers a truly distinctive work environment.

In 1918, Point Pelee National Park was the first national park established for conservation purposes.


The area is within the traditional territory of the Caldwell First Nation and Walpole Island First Nation and has a rich cultural history dating back at least 6,000 years.

The park and the First Nations work in collaboration on a range of initiatives, including marsh restoration, hyperabundant species management, traditional ceremonies in the park, employment for First Nations youth, and sharing knowledge for cultural conservation.


Point Pelee National Park is an ecologically significant area, composed of a 15 km2 sand spit and marsh complex that extends into Lake Erie, the park provides habitat for more than 390 species of birds and 750 vascular plants, and also supports over 60 species at risk protected under the Species at Risk Act (SARA) (S.C.

2002, c.29).

The marsh at Point Pelee National Park is one of the best and largest remaining examples of a southern Great Lakes marsh and is recognized as a Wetland of International Significance by the Ramsar Convention of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
