Responsibilities

Exhibition and Programme Planning

  • Work with the Programme team to design exhibition structures and install approaches that meet both the artists' and MOCA's requirements.
  • Communicate with artists to determine best practices for the installation of their works.
  • Create Sketch-Up design files, plans and elevations that can be used to plan projects and to be shared with artists and external stakeholders.
  • Consult and advise on best practices for the display of artworks on an ongoing basis.
  • Consult on and review detailed installation plans for each exhibition, and monitor their implementation through all stages, in consultation with the Programme team.
  • Prepare a material needs summary for each exhibition prior to install periods and place and track orders for approved materials.
  • Research and advise the Programme team on costsaving initiatives and alternative approaches to production when appropriate.
  • Prepare for deinstallation in regards to storage, crating, recycling and trash requirements.
  • Ensure all artworks, as well as spaces open to the public, are well maintained and functioning, and that museum standards and a safe environment are maintained.

Installation Oversight

  • Plan and coordinate labour requirements for installation/deinstallation of exhibitions and programs within budget and in consultation with the Exhibition and Installation Manager.
  • With the Exhibition and Installation Manager, hire, develop, motivate, coach and manage the exhibition preparator team.
  • Ensure a safe working environment for the preparators, observing them and making sure they are aware of safety protocols.

Equipment Management and Museum Spaces

  • Manage the workshop area and arrange storage of MOCA's inventory of exhibition furniture and support structures.
  • Manage the inventory of audiovisual equipment and installation tools owned, rented by, or from, MOCA.
  • Troubleshoot A/V equipment as needed both inside and outside of the exhibition area.
  • Be available to reorganize furniture throughout MOCA in response to programming needs.
  • Ensure all equipment is safe and functional for the preparators.
  • Assist and consult with the Facilities team for the ongoing maintenance of all MOCA spaces.
  • Flag urgent and ongoing issues within the exhibition spaces or with artworks to the Exhibition and Installation Manager.

Skills and Qualifications

  • 3+ years, experience working within a museum, gallery or arts institution, within an exhibitions or production department
  • Excellent working knowledge of Sketchup
  • Working at Heights and Scissor Lift certification desirable
  • Knowledge of museum lighting and environmental guidelines for presenting contemporary art produced in a range of media
  • Experience working with a preparator team, including interviewing potential new hires and scheduling shifts
  • Experience managing strict timelines and budgets
  • Excellent communication and diplomacy skills
