About the Manitoba Métis Federation


The Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF) is the democratic Government of the Red River Métis, also known as the Manitoba Métis, and represents the claims, rights, and interests of their people.

The Red River Métis are Canada's Negotiating Partners in Confederation and the Founders of the Province of Manitoba.


The Manitoba Métis Federation was established in 1967 and continues the legacy of their ancestors as the national Government of the Red River.

The MMF delivers programs and services in the sectors of child and family services; justice; housing; youth; education; human resources; economic development and natural resources.

The MMF along with its affiliated corporations, authorities, and agencies has just under one thousand employees to develop and administer programs and services.


About the Chief Financial Officer


Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is responsible for managing the overall financial position and plays a critical role in developing and implementing the financial strategy of the MMF.

As a member of the senior leadership team, the CFO is responsible for advising, evaluating, and assisting the MMF and affiliates with their financial plans, economic modeling, and all fiscal and fiduciary responsibilities in conjunction with the governance, finance, corporate, audit, and investment for the operations.


Key Leadership Accountabilities

Strategic Planning and Operational Management_

  • Participate in the key decisions as a member of the executive management team and assist in formulating the MMF's future direction and supporting tactical initiatives
  • Contribute to the strategic thinking and direction by providing financial and accounting information, analysis, and recommendations
  • Translate the strategic and business plans for financial planning and accounting into operational plans through the establishment of functional objectives that align with organizational objectives
  • Monitor and direct the implementation of strategic business plans and Implement operational best practices
  • Provide management oversight of the daytoday operational accounting and finances ensuring cash flow is appropriate for the MMF operations
  • Develop performance measures that support the MMF's strategic direction
  • Manage the capital request and budgeting processes
  • Establish finance operational strategies by evaluating trends, establishing critical measurements, and quality customerservice strategies
  • Forecast capital needs and staff requirements and identify monetary resources

Financial, Funding, and Risk Management_

  • Drive the MMF's financial planning to ensure cash flow is appropriate for the MMF's operations
  • Report financial results to the board of directors and oversee the issuance of financial information
  • Monitor financial performance by measuring and analyzing results, initiating corrective actions, and minimizing the impact of variances
  • Arrange for debt and equity financing
  • Manage the investment of funds and pension funds
  • Control and evaluate the MMF's fundraising plan and capital structure
  • Perform risk management by analyzing the MMF's liabilities and investments and understanding and mitigating key elements of the MMF's risk profile
  • Monitor all open legal issues involving the MMF and legal issues affecting the Métis citizens
  • Construct and monitor reliable control systems and maintain appropriate insurance coverage
  • Ensure that record keeping meets the requirements of auditors and government agencies.
  • Report risk issues to the audit committee of the board of directors
  • Maintain relations with external auditors and investigate their findings and recommendations

Support and Human Resources Management_

  • Maintain relationships and work collaboratively with all members of the management team
  • Oversee employee benefit plans, with particular emphasis on maximizing a costeffective benefits package
  • Manage any third parties and vendor relationships to which functions have been outsourced
  • Update job knowledge by remaining aware of new regulations; participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations
  • Ensure compliance with the law and MMF's policies

Education and Experience Requirements

  • A postsecondary degree in finance or business with Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation, complemented by 5 to 10 years working in a senior role leading the finance function. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Experience in financial modeling, financial analysis, cash flow management, and monitoring, investments, and economic development
