Embarking on uncharted territory for insurance brokers, we are on the lookout for a Team Lead in Engineering to join our Payments Team. This team focuses on enhancing the checkout experience, encompassing customer data verification, e-signatures, payment processing, and invoicing integrations utilizing MERN stack technologies.

As the Team Lead, your role involves mentoring and guiding your team to deliver high-quality features and products. You will provide code reviews and offer support as needed to ensure the team's success. Additionally, you will exemplify cross-functional teamwork by collaborating with other Team Leads to share engineering and leadership best practices, contributing to engineering decisions, and tackling technical challenges effectively.

In this remote-first role within the GTA, the responsibilities include:

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate on cross-team engineering topics with Engineering Leadership, including other team leads and engineering managers.
  • Coach and nurture team members to cultivate a self-organizing, cross-functional team dynamic.
  • Identify areas for growth and improvement for your direct reports, monitoring their progress towards objectives.
  • Develop and track team goals and performance indicators.
  • Collaborate with the Product Manager and team members to ensure clear understanding and breakdown of business requirements into actionable tasks.
  • Assist your team in formulating, defining, and upholding your team's charter.
  • Encourage knowledge sharing and maintain an open, safe work environment.
  • Engage in strategic discussions and outline tradeoffs for potential software solutions.
  • Work with project stakeholders and the development team to design and construct scalable, user-friendly systems and in-house tools.
  • Grasp the processes and workflows required for implementing, testing, deploying, monitoring, and releasing features and fixes.
  • Evaluate, define, and implement monitoring strategies and contingency plans for platform areas reliant on third-party vendors.
  • Perform administrative functions such as reviewing reports, approving expenditures, enforcing rules, and providing feedback or recommendations.
  • Foster a culture of continuous learning and enhancement.
  • Participate in leadership development training programs internally and externally.
  • Perform any other assigned duties.
Requirements
  • University degree or college diploma in a recognized technical, vocational, or academic program (preferably in Engineering or Computer Science) or equivalent professional experience.
  • Over 6 years of experience in software engineering or development.
  • More than 3 years of experience managing developers on a product team.
  • Proficiency in management tools such as goal-setting frameworks (e.g., OKRs, SMART goals).
  • Experience in providing and receiving constructive feedback, overseeing performance management, mentoring, and delegating work effectively.
  • Ability to make decisions and drive results in ambiguous scenarios using critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience in creating robust and highly available integrations with third-party systems.
  • Familiarity with JavaScript ecosystem (MongoDB, NodeJS, TypeScript), AWS, Micro Services, Micro Frontends, Queue, REST APIs, and SOAP integration.
  • A passion for writing clean, reusable, and well-structured code.
Nice to Have
  • Conceptual understanding of Infrastructure as Code, containerization, and Kubernetes.
  • Proficiency in additional concepts and technologies like JavaScript tooling and frameworks (React, Jest, NX, Webpack).
  • Exposure to working with payments or accounting platforms (e.g., SAP, Xero, Stripe) is advantageous.
