The Barrett Centre provides crisis intervention supports to all those aged 16+ of any gender identity.

The program provides services including 16 short-term respite beds, in-person and telephone support, information and referral; crisis assessment, counseling and support; symptom stabilization for individuals experiencing a mental health crisis.


  • Be compassionate, hospitable, and nonjudgmental
  • Conduct risk and suicide assessment, crisis intervention, deescalating strategies
  • Determine care planning & crisis counseling
  • Continuous monitoring and evaluation; individual support
  • Provide linkage and community referral; advocacy; collaboration and coordination with other service providers
  • Be a part of shared handson responsibility for program operation
  • Staff are also provided the opportunity for training and education, cofacilitation of programming and groups, and collaboration with other community partners and coworkers

Qualifications

  • Demonstrate a commitment to the mission values of Good Shepherd with sensitivity to the issues related to mental illness, addictions, poverty, homelessness and dual diagnosis
  • Related postsecondary education with a degree in social work, nursing or related fields is required
  • 5 years' experience working with adults in mental health and addictions preferred
  • Previous experience in crisis work is an asset
  • Must have an ability to adapt interventions to diverse populations
  • Fluency in a 2nd language is an asset
  • CPR certification or willingness to be certified is required
  • Must be willing to work twelve hour shifts (nights) and alternate weekends
