Job Overview:


As a member of Wawanesa's Legal and Governance team and operational leader of its privacy program, the Privacy Manager works closely with Wawanesa's businesses to provide the advice, guidance, tools and oversight to effectively manage Wawanesa's privacy obligations to its customers, regulators and other third parties.

This role is considered a head-office role and will be required to communicate with internal stakeholders across Canada where the primary business language utilized is English.


Responsibilities:

  • Monitors and considers changes to privacy laws, regulations and best practices, analyzes business impacts and provides compliance recommendations to the Vice President, General Counsel and Chief Privacy Officer for consideration.
  • Provides guidance, advice, support and direction to Wawanesa's operating businesses on privacy matters to manage compliance and address possible changes.
  • Oversees the development and use of processes and other tools for managing privacy compliance obligations.
  • Addresses complex or other material aspects of privacy breaches and access to information requests.
  • Oversees, monitors and provides reporting to management on privacy breaches, access to information requests and other privacy related matters.
  • Oversees, manages and tracks key privacy projects and initiatives.
  • Develops and enhances productive business relationships by liaising with peer business and external stakeholders.
  • Manages the privacy compliance team, and provides guidance, advice and support to other members of the Ethics, Compliance and Legal team and to other business stakeholders related to the development and refinement of information handling practices and processes.
  • Leads the process of conducting our privacy impact assessments.
  • Leads review of thirdparty contracts for Privacy related risks
  • Oversees management of breach notifications and related regulatory communications, under the direction of the Vice President, General Counsel and Chief Governance Officer.

Qualifications:

  • At least 5 years' experience dealing with privacy matters in the private sector, including access to information requests
  • At least 2 years' experience managing a team or privacy function
  • IAPP or similar designation an asset strongly preferred
  • Completion of a Juris Doctor (JD) or Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree or equivalent contract review and drafting experience an asset
  • Excellent analytical and problemsolving skills, with the ability to conduct detailed analysis of information, and to select and implement best solutions in a timely manner
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills, with the ability to communicate at the right level for the audience and present information or arguments in a convincing manner
  • Excellent planning and organizing skills
  • Excellent attention to detail with the ability to influence key relationships
  • Postsecondary education with a focus on legal or public policy matters required.
  • Insurance industry experience an asset
