Job Summary


The Research Assistant will conduct specialized research requiring formal training in statistical analyses and specialized knowledge and experience with the manifestations of traumatic spinal cord injury.

The Research Assistant will use their formal training in statistics and research methodology to generate statistical analyses and written technical reports on the healthcare utilization of British Columbians that have suffered traumatic spinal cord injury.

The Research Assistant is required to conduct complex analyses and have in-depth knowledge of traumatic spinal cord injury.


The Research Assistant will work closely as a member of multidisciplinary research team consisting of health services researchers, clinicians supporting patients with traumatic spinal cord injury and other research assistants.

The Research Assistant will present their interim results on a consistent basis.

She/he will be responsible for ensuring project deliverables are completed on time and at a standard appropriate for scholarly publications and media.

The Research Assistant is required to have obtained appropriate certification/approval regarding safe management of sensitive data.

Organizational Status


This position is within the UBC Centre for Health Services and Policy Research (CHSPR) in UBC's School of Population and Public Health.

CHSPR is a collaborative research environment where faculty, research staff, and graduate students study how health care can best be organized, financed, and delivered.

The Research Assistant will work under the direct supervision of Dr. Jason Sutherland, faculty member and interim Director of the Centre for Health Services and Policy Research.

The Research Assistant will routinely engage with spinal care surgeons, allied health researchers, and policy makers from the Vancouver Spinal Cord Program and the Praxis Institute at the Blusson Spinal Cord Centre.

Work Performed

  • Assists research team with the design and modification of statistical programming in R to conduct complex statistical analyses of health services utilization of people having had a traumatic spinal cord injury. Determines how to appropriately link the data together to construct the analytic dataset, and which types of statistical analyses are appropriate to answer the research questions. Be responsible for using statistical methods for evaluating the goodnessoffit of the models.
  • Interprets complex analyses of health services utilization of traumatic spinal cord injury patients and preparation of reports and draft sections of manuscripts in collaboration with the supervisor and the coinvestigators of the research team.
  • Coordinates between research team members and finalizes research design specifications and implementing analyses. Expects to provide wellresearched/referenced and documented recommendations for PI's decision making.
  • Writes reports, drafts data and methods sections of manuscripts, and coauthoring peerreviewed manuscripts with the support of the research team.
  • Responsible for exercising judgement, responsibilities, and initiative in determining work procedures and coordinating the research project's deliverables.
  • Other typical responsibilities include: conducting literature reviews of related research within the broader context of traumatic spinal cord injury and health services research.

Complexity of Duties:

This is a research position within a program of research involving a variety of projects and sophisticated research methods.

The work requires considerable judgement in the management of research priorities, schedules, and task delegation.

Confidentiality:

Employees of the Centre for Health Services and Policy Research always work under strict confidentiality because of the nature of the Centre's data holdings.

Any breach in data security would place the future of the Centre, and its many programs of research, at risk.
