Position Overview:

In keeping with our People Plan's culture of learning and core values of collaboration and change and growth, we are recruiting for Lead Mechanic Technician. This role reports to the Fleet Supervisor and is responsible for overseeing the work of a team of technicians ensuring quality standards are met and tasks are completed in a timely manner.

Responsibilities:

Assign and delegate the carrying out of the work to be performed, with particular emphasis on quality of work and conduct of staff. Ensure that the work is carried out in a safe and expeditious manner and complies with operational standards. Advise and monitor staff to ensure the work is carried out in accordance with safety regulations, and that staff wear and/or make use of the required safety equipment at appropriate times. Communicate appropriately with the public and other agencies concerning the work being performed. Provide on-the-job training and orientation for new and less experienced employees. Answer the telephone and respond to work-related requests. Ensure proper attendance by completing necessary forms. Keep an accurate record of work assignments using jobs/work orders on the FLINT system. Follow up with user departments regarding vehicles that are out of service or in for repair. Fill out applicable reports for irregular activities (accident, injury, sick leave, Receive or forward information or instructions to other Lead Mechanics, Supervisors, or Managers that work shifts before and after your shift. Provide parts through the stock keeper and approved suppliers. Ensure all work orders, inspection sheets, PMCVI forms are filled out properly. Ensure any work performed by outside contractors is recorded and that they leave a work order, if appropriate Assist shop personnel as required. Perform visual checks of staff to ensure workplace safety, work progress, and proximity in the workplace in the event of an emergency. Conduct external perimeter checks of the building periodically to maintain facility security. Follow lock up procedures prior to the weekend, nightly, or as required when shop is left vacant. Perform related repairs and maintenance to the City of Kitchener fleet of heavy equipment and vehicles. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Grade 12 diploma or equivalent. Valid Certificate of Qualification from the Ontario Ministry of Colleges and Universities as a Truck and Coach Technician and/or Automotive Service Technician. (Candidates holding only one of the above Certificates of Qualification will be required to obtain the second within 3 years of hire). Valid MTO Class "DZ" driver's license in good standing or be willing to obtain within 6 months of hire (at own expense). (No more than 3 Demerit Points, no more than 1 conviction in previous 36 months, no driving related Canada Criminal Code convictions in previous 36 months, no CVOR 'at fault' convictions in previous 24 months and no ignition interlock restrictions) Must be "competent" under Occupational Health and Safety Act by having the knowledge, training, and experience, know the regulations that apply to the work, and have knowledge of any potential or actual danger to health or safety in the workplace. Possess and maintain a minimum standard tool complement. Demonstrated leadership skills with an ability to motivate staff. Familiar with vehicles onboard computerized equipment. Welding experience with gas, mig, etc. Basic computer skills. Ability to support and project values compatible with the organization. Excellent communication and analytical skills with a genuine desire to assist customers. Must have the ability to participate as an effective team member. Preference will be given to applicants who possess additional certificates pertinent to the motive power trades such as heavy-duty equipment, natural gas, propane, etc. Must be reliable with a good attitude and employment record.
