Main Purpose & Function

The Utility Maintenance Worker III - Lead Hand is responsible for operational, janitorial and minor maintenance work of a lead hand nature in ice rink facilities and other recreation facilities.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities
The Lead Hand is responsible for operating aquatic systems, DDC systems, heating, refrigeration, and ice-making equipment.

This position is also responsible for monitoring and logging stationary equipment and related controls in various mechanical plant; carrying out janitorial and minor building maintenance work; and performing specified lead hand tasks in assigning and overseeing the work of co-workers.


The Lead Hand works under the direction of the Maintenance Technician II and assists with the scheduling and monitoring of the work of subordinates.

The Lead Hand is also actively involved in the on-site preventative maintenance program.

The Lead Hand will assist in the repair and overhaul of equipment and in the completion of regular equipment maintenance procedures.


Ice maintenance responsibilities include scraping, flooding, edging ice rink surfaces; painting lines and logos on ice surfaces; adjusting/changing blades and other ice resurface maintenance as required.

Additional duties include cleaning and maintaining public areas; washrooms and change rooms; carrying out security checks of the facility and assisting program staff and users as needed.

This position is responsible for the refrigeration plant safety procedures in the absence of the Maintenance Technician II.

In addition, the incumbent may be required to perform operational, janitorial, minor maintenance tasks in adjacent facilities (community centre, fitness centre or indoor pools) as well as seasonal tasks associated with outdoor pools.


Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Completion of Grade 12. Completion of a recognized certification program in building services work supplemented by technical training related to the work plus sound related experience; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Technical Safety BC Refrigeration Operator Certificate or 4th Class Power Engineering Certificate (or higher) is required
  • Pool Operators Level I & II is required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of icemaking methods and resurfacing equipment.
  • Working knowledge of the materials, methods and equipment used in janitorial and building maintenance work.
  • Working knowledge of ice rink refrigeration systems, water filtration equipment, and disinfection systems.
  • Ability to assign and check the work of others.
  • Ability to operate ice resurfacing equipment and any other tools or equipment related to the work.
  • Ability to prepare simple reports.
  • Ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public groups and users of the facility to ensure observance of the rules and regulations.
  • Ability to observe equipment in operation and report on any malfunctions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Good health and strength sufficient to perform a variety of manual tasks in janitorial and building maintenance work.
  • Above average manual dexterity and mechanical aptitude.

Driver's License and Record Checks:

  • A current and valid BC Driver's License and a Satisfactory driving record
  • The license must not include any restrictions that would affect the ability to legally and safely carry out job responsibilities.
  • Local area travel is a requirement of this position. Transportation arrangements must meet the operational requirements of the Park Board.


The City's COVID-19 vaccination policy is currently suspended and as a result, vaccination against COVID-19 is not required at this time.

However, should circumstances change and the City deem it necessary to re-introduce such policy, you may be required to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 in order to be eligible to continue performing your duties.
