No.9 is an arts organization that uses art and design to bring awareness to environmental concerns.

We deliver programs in schools, online and in the public domain designed to encourage the use of creative thinking to resolve environmental issues and to promote a sustainable lifestyle.

Launched in 2018, in partnership with Dunin-Deshpande Queen's Innovation Centre and St.

Lawrence College Department of Skilled Trades and Tourism, No.9 Gardens is a hands-on facility created to empower youth to lead a revolution in building resilient communities, utilizing the Nine Pillars of Sustainable Design developed by No.


9:

_Civic Engagement & Leadership, Food Security, Open Green Space, Waste Management, Water Management, Green Building Design, Transportation, Alternative Energy, Public Art & Design.

No.9 Gardens is committed to providing education around sustainable local food systems and how we can feed our cities.

Training young people how to grow local organic produce is a great way to offset carbon caused by food waste and food transportation.


Details:

  • Supervision and mentorship will be provided by Elizabeth Davies
  • As there will be 3 sustainable gardening and education interns, the work will be tailored to each intern's knowledge, skills and goals. Each position will end up being different
  • Our garden is new and experimental, so we will be learning alongside you. No previous gardening experience is required, only enthusiasm to learn
  • We are open on the weekends for people to visit, hike, pick their own produce, etc
  • As No.9 Gardens is a remote location (1516 Summers Rd, Lyndhurst, ON), communal transportation is encouraged. We encourage arranging a carpool with any other interns that live nearby
  • Staff will be able to use fresh produce from the garden as well as have their own garden bed to care for

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Greenhouse work
  • Preparing garden beds
  • Transplanting
  • Weeding
  • Orchard care
  • Harvesting
  • Donation delivery
  • Seed saving
  • Food process/cooking
  • Selling at farmer's market
  • Workshop planning and coordinating
  • Social media
  • Working with community partners
  • Beekeeping
  • Assist agritourism interns when needed

Community partners and projects:

  • Planting of a Three Sisters garden and organizing a harvest social with Queen's Office of Indigenous Initiatives
  • FoodWrx program through

Community Harvest Kingston:
providing Kingston youth with opportunities to explore many aspects of bringing a product from seed to customer

  • Seed saving
with Kingston Area Seed Saving Initiative

Qualifications:

Requirements:

  • Strong teamwork skills. You will be working very closely with the 3 other interns and the garden manager throughout the summer
  • Ability to work in all weather and conditions. Gardening can be time sensitive, so flexibility is required as some days may be longer than other depending on the work that needs to get done
  • Leadership skills. Each intern will have the opportunity to lead projects or partnerships that align with their skills and interests
  • Excellent communication skills. Interns will be actively engaging with overnight guests, visitors, workshop attendees and farmers market goers. We expect interns to be able to share our work and goals as an organization enthusiastically
  • Organizational skills. The team will meet most mornings and come up with a daily plan to complete various tasks as necessary. Everyday will be different.
  • Driver's license
  • Sales/customer service experience
  • Culinary experience is an asset
  • Previous experience and/or related education is beneficial, but not required
