Job Summary

The PE Department Head leads and represents a team of colleagues in all matters related to learning and teaching, curriculum, and assessment in PE. They collaborate with other Department Heads to ensure vertical and horizontal continuity and progression and participate in decision-making about the school's educational programme. In addition to promoting the highest quality of teaching and learning and student achievement in PE, the Department Head also ensures that curriculum, teaching and learning in PE contributes to the school's strategic goals. This includes a focus on progressive teaching models, expanding connections with partners which deepen students' learning experiences, and partnering with students to design and personalize learning goals.

Responsibilities

Uphold and advance the school's vision, mission, values and standards

Set an example of integrity, commitment, collegiality and competence

Set a positive example and provide leadership to colleagues to engage in a variety of professional development activities; ensure your department members are meeting professional expectations (meeting deadlines, punctuality, etc.)

Determine and implement departmental goals on an annual basis that reflect the academic priorities of the school

Maintain and advance the department image in the school (hall-boards, events, PE uniform compliance by students etc.)

Participate in leadership meetings and run regular department meetings and planning sessions

Monitor student academic performance, achievement, and any academic misconduct

Ensuring that scope & sequence and course plans are complete and maintained

Improve & develop the department's educational practices through:

Setting departmental goals

Developing teaching strategies towards excellence, improving skills and experiential learning opportunities

Mentoring faculty (incl. Observing teaching, and supporting professional growth plans)

Supporting educational growth and adherence to school's practices & policies

Ensuring alignment with curriculum and pedagogical best practices

Assigning teaching loads with the best interests of the students and the school in mind, considering teacher's strengths and teaching experience in subject areas

Ensuring that department members employ a variety of appropriate teaching and assessment strategies by having intentional, scheduled conversations with them; approve all final assessment to ensure they are aligned with department assessment philosophy

Ensuring that courses are relevant, the content is suitable, the standards are challenging, and that there are deliberate, meaningful, and intentional transitions between elements of the PE course

Partner with faculty members to address parent/student concerns

Set, evaluate and monitor the departmental budget and the ensuing expenses

Communicate with IT as needed

Ensure all external facilities are booked and communicate expectations to faculty

Participate in academic teams (report card editing, IEP, student advisor, etc.)

Support school events (athletics banquet, community education nights, shows, concerts, fairs, etc.)

Coach a minimum of 1 team per semester

Requirements

Bachelor's Degree in a kinesiology related field is preferred

BC Teacher Certification (Teachers Regulation Branch) in the form of a Certificate of Qualification (CoQ) or Independent School Teaching Certificate (ISTC)

2+ years of experience teaching Physical Education

Master's Degree in Education, or Leadership (or must start one within 3 years)

Work with students who have learning differences is preferred

Independent school experience and coaching/extracurricular experience are assets

Class 4 license or willingness to obtain one is also an asset

FA offers an exceptional and stimulating environment, along with competitive employment packages. The annual salary for this position falls within the range of $64,691 to $115,695, plus a $3,500 Department Head stipend. The final salary will be determined based on experience and education.
